April 21 - Johan Fourie beat all comers at the new rebuilt Zwartkops circuit near Pretoria, taking both the qualifying race and the feature race. The much revamped race track, which has been closed for three years, introduced a new race format - a short qualifying sprint followed by a longer event which included a compulsory pitstop.

Qualifying belonged to Jonathan du Toit. The son of the Zwartkops owner took pole in practice, followed by JJ Maree and Grant van Schalkwyk.

RACE 1

Raceday was a different matter for Jonathan du Toit. Several incidents at the start of the qualifying race, including a colision between du Toit and JJ Maree, saw much of the event run under yellow, while du Toit and Maree's cars were seperated from each other. Grant van Schalkwyk led out of the chaos, but when the race went green he could not hold back Johan Fourie. Van Schalkwyk was followed home by veteran Johan Coetzee and Kosie Swanepoel. A minor drama on the final lap was when Peter Lindenberg punted off George Fouche, then retired to ensure that the reigning champion still started the main race ahead of him.

RACE 2 </pre> The main event was a Johan Fourie benefit. With drivers starting in the order in which they finished the first race, Coetzee passed his team-mate van Shalkwyk into second place on the first lap, while JJ Maree started a charge from the back of the field, eventually grabbing Coetzee's second place at the hairpin.

First to make a compulsory pitstop was John Simpson, followed by Grant van Schalkwyk, who had problems in the pits. Race leader Johan Fourie had a near collision with British ASCAR guest driver Warren Kent in the pits, while Lindenberg stopped very late.

Despite the near miss in the pits and an off later when he outbraked himself Fourie dominated the race, controlling the gap between himself and the rest. Behind him JJ Maree's charge came to an end when he collided with a marshall's car next to the track, although he rejoined later. This left Johan Coetzee and George Fouche to follow Fourie home. Jonathan du Toit had a dismal time on his home track, spinning out more than once and ending up near the back.

George Fouche, despite never having won a race, still leads the championship from Peter Lindenberg and fast man Johan Fourie. The next race follows after a 2 month break, on 23 June at the spectacular East London Grand Prix circuit. The seaside track should see great racing.
