Wet Grounds End This Weekend's Activites, Season Opener Now On May 2
VERNON, NY- The combination of new clay and wet weather has forced Utica-Rome Speedway officials to postpone the opening of the speedway's 43rd season that was scheduled for Sunday April 25. The season will now get underway on May 2 when Crossroads Community Church presents a regular show of DIRT 358-Modifieds, DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Four Cylinder Super Stocks. Gates will open at 3 p.m. and racing will get underway at 5:30 p.m.
"With the ground so wet and the track still so soft, we decided to wait another week to open and try to prepare the track as best we can." stated General Manager Chip Burdick. "We have the best interest of the drivers and their equipment in mind. With the season just getting underway, we don't want to have everyone tearing up their cars up already."
The first event in the chase for the $10,000 358-Modified championship will now be a week later, as regulars Mitch Gibbs, Todd Burley, Willy Decker, Paul Kinney, John Ramsey, and more look to hold off newcomers Brian Weaver, Stewart Friesen, Dave Camara, Jeremy Smith, and Ronnie Johnson for the coveted title. Bill Shantel, Jr., Jerry Holmes, and Art Newman are expected back to defend their titles as well in the Sportsman, Pro Stock, and Pure Stocks.
Utica-Rome Speedway is located just a few minutes south of New York State Thruway Exit 33 in Vernon, NY. More information on events at the fast half mile oval, log on to www.uticaromespeedway com or call the speedway office at (315)829-4557.
PRACTICE SESSIONS ADDED TO UTICA-ROME SCHEDULE
VERNON, NY- In an effort to give competitors some laps around the newly resurfaced Utica-Rome Speedway, track management has scheduled two practice sessions for the evenings of Thursday April 29 and Friday April 30. The gates will open at 4 p.m. both evenings with practice scheduled to run 5 to 9 p.m. Pit admission will be $10 while the grandstands will be free.
By participating in the practice sessions, competitors will get their first look at the new surface before the rescheduled opener on May 2. Fans will also get their first look at some of the racers that will make Utica-Rome Speedway their Sunday night home. Season passes and reserved seating will also be available to purchase on either of these evenings.
Utica-Rome Speedway operates every Sunday night from late April until mid-September under the DIRT Motorsports banner. Five classes compete weekly, incuding the 358-Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Four Cylinder Super Stocks. Unless otherwise noted, gates open weekly at 3 p.m., with racing starting at 5:30 p.m. For more information on race events at the famed Vernon oval, please log on to www.uticaromespeedway.com or call the speedway office at (315) 829-4557.
