VERNON- Utica-Rome Speedway Promoter Tom Cole recently announced the addition of a second Sunoco Race Fuels Sportsman Super DIRT Series event to an already ambitious 2003 race schedule.
The stars of the DIRT Sportsman Sunoco Race Fuels Super DIRT Series will visit the fast Vernon half-mile oval twice in 2003. The first event is part of the annual Mother's Day Special, accompanied by the Turning Stone Casino Resort Super DIRT Series for the DIRT 358-Modifieds. Then on June 29th, the tour comes back to Utica-Rome Speedway when Nice N Easy Grocery Shoppes presents the 4th Annual "Night of Legends Reunion" plus a regular show of DIRT 358 Modifieds, DIRT Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks. The Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club will be in action for this event.
With the 2002 Sunoco Race Fuels Sportsman Super DIRT Series champion Randy Chrysler, along with a handful of other top tour regulars, moving into the DIRT Modified or 358-Modified divisions, the 2003 tour could be the most competitive in DIRT history. Utica-Rome Speedway regulars Paul Carey and Bill Shantel, Jr finished fifth and eighth in the 2002 tour. Mike Button won the series event in 2002.
For the 2003 season, the Sunoco Race Fuels Sportsman Super DIRT Series will be divided into two divisions. An overall tour champion will decided by the highest point total of the East or West division, plus the point total from the six combined (East and West) races. The Utica-Rome Speedway events will be part of the East division. This format should allow more drivers to compete in the series and cut down on travel expenses.
Racing action will return the Utica-Rome Speedway on April 27th when Gates Cole Insurance presents the 42nd season opener with 40 laps for the DIRT 358-Modifieds and a regular show for the DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks. This also will be a Super DIRT Week 358-Modified Championship qualifier.
