VERNON- Utica-Rome Speedway promoter Tom Cole recently announced the addition of the North East Affordable Racing Association (NEARA) for IMCA type modifieds to the 2003 race schedule. The NEARA Challenge Series will kick off its inaugural season on Sunday, June 8th. A regular show of DIRT 358-Modifieds, DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks will also be in action that evening.

NEARA started as an idea by several area racers and brought to life by series organizer Paul Szmal. Currently, the NEARA Challenge Series schedule stands at 4 races, with Thunder Mountain, New Afton Speedway, and Tioga also hosting events. With affordability being a key ingredient of NEARA's concept, the series is not expected to expand much more for the 2003 season in an attempt to keep travel expenses at a minimum for its competitors.

The IMCA type modified was introduced to the Central New York region nearly a decade ago and has grown immensely in recent years. With Utica-Rome Speedway being in a central location to many tracks that run the IMCA style modified on a regular basis, a full field of racers is expected. Many of the area's top IMCA drivers are expected to participate in NEARA's inaugural season. For more information regarding NEARA, series organizer Paul Szmal can be reached by emailing smallguy@krock.com.

Utica-Rome Speedway will open for competition on Sunday, April 27th with Gates-Cole Insurance presenting the 42nd season opener featuring a 40 lap Super DIRT Week 358-Modified qualifier. A regular show of DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks fill out the evening. Gates will open at 4pm, with racing at 6pm. A test and tune session is also scheduled for Monday, April 21st. Gates will open at 5pm, with practice for all divisions to start at 6pm and end at 9pm. For more information on the 2003 schedule, call the speedway at (315) 829-4557 or log on to www.uticaromespeedway.com.
