Utica-Rome 2001 Season Concludes With 358-Modified Super Dirt Series 100

VERNON, NY -- The 40th anniversary race season at Utica-Rome Speedway will conclude with a bang on Sunday September 16 when the Sunoco Race Fuels 358-Modified Super DIRT Series rolls into town for the Nice N' Easy Grocery / F.X. Caprara 100-lap event. Also scheduled is the big race of the year for the DIRT Pro Stocks, featuring the Automobile Recyclers Association of New York Pro Stock Super DIRT Series plus the Pure Stocks in a feature only. Race time is set for 6pm.

An expected contingent of the top 358-Modified teams in the nation will all be on hand for vying for the $3,000 winner's share of the 100-lap Super DIRT Series event, featuring point leader Danny Johnson of Rochester. Steve Paine, Brett Hearn, Alan Johnson, Todd Burley, Matt Sheppard, Vic Coffey, and Pete Bicknell will all be there to end Johnson's dominance of 358-Modified Super DIRT Series events at the speedway. The legendary Jack Johnson is the defending race winner, and will be leading a host of track regulars all looking to steal the glory from the invading teams. Todd Burley, the 2001 track champion and a series regular, will also be tough to beat as he has seven regular victories this season at the track. Ryan Baye, Jason Barney, Gus Schmidt, Roger Phelps, Ron Holmes, and Mitch Gibbs will all be there to win the biggest race of the season at their home turf.

Just last year, this race was one of the more thrilling and dramatic events in speedway history, with ageless veteran Jack Johnson winning by half a car length over Brett Hearn. Dale Planck, Todd Burley, and J.J. Michaels completed the top five. A guaranteed starting spot will be on the line this Sunday for the Super DIRT Week 358-Modified Championship held on the Syracuse Mile.

The DIRT Pro Stocks will also be featured in the 25-lap trail race on the ARANY Pro Stock Super DIRT Series. Track champion and defending race winner Bret Belden of West Edmeston will try to keep the invaders behind him once again in this special event, paying $600 to win. Jerry Holmes, Wayne Archer, Jason Rood, and Dave Moyer will be on hand to host the invading teams including point leader Pete Stefanski, Jason Boyle, Andy Dembek, Ricky Breed, Tom Barron, T.J. Fitzgibbons, and Jipp Ortiz. The Pure Stocks will be the last event of the evening, and they will only be running a feature.

Utica-Rome Speedway pit gates on Sunday September 16 will open at 3pm, with the grandstand gates opening at 4pm. Time trials for the 358-Modified will start at 5:30pm and racing will begin at 6pm. The track is located just off the NYS Thruway on Route 5 in the village of Vernon. Free parking and overnight camping is allowed on speedway grounds.
