POST RACE TECHNICAL INSPECTION HANDS DAVE CAMARA THE WIN ON DIG SAFELY NEW NIGHT AT UTICA-ROME SPEEDWAY

VERNON, NY (June 5)- Bobby Varin's season at the Utica-Rome Speedway, with the exception of the Race of Champions event, has been filled with one disappointment after another. This Sunday saw Varin standing in victory lane with an impressive victory, but his joy was short lived after going through post race inspection where he would be disqualified, handing the win over to Dave Camara. Other winners on Dig Safely New York night were Steve Way in the Sportsman, Jason Rood in the Pro Stocks, Russ Marsden in the Pure Stocks, George Catanzano in the IMCA Modifieds, and Chuck Powelczyk in the Four Cylinder Super Stocks.

John Ramsey and Don Mattison would lead the 358-Modified event to Matt Burdick's green flag, with Ramsey leading the opening 2 laps. Mattison would take over the next 2 circuits only to have Ramsey regain the lead on lap 5. By lap 6, Bobby Varin would move into the runner-up spot by lap 6 and attempt to chase down Ramsey. Lap 10 was when Varin charged by Ramsey for the lead, as he was trying to erase the memory of the previous week where he led in the late stages only to finish 3rd. At halfway, it was Varin, Dave Camara, Mitch Gibbs, Ted Lamb, and Ramsey.

Camara slipped into the lead on lap 17, showing his hand a little early. Varin would get back by Camara on the following circuit and then proceed to pull away slightly as he was looking for his 1st point win of the season at the speedway. Varin would hold on to lead the remainder of the event, with Camara, Gibbs, Lamb, and Dave Rauscher filling out the top 5 spots. Varin's elation was short-lived, as he was disqualified in post race tech inspection for an apparent carb violation.

Tim Mayne took early command of the 20-lap Sportsman event, leading the first 3 laps. Steve Way, the 8th place starter, would complete his charge to the front of the field by lap 4 as he was scored the leader by that point. Way would continue to hold off the charges of Mayne, who was desperately trying to regain the lead. Making a late race charge was Billy Price, who moved into 2nd at lap 17 and then passed Way for the lead a lap later. A late race caution would bring the field together again, giving Way another chance for the win. Way took advantage of the 2nd chance, sweeping around the outside of Price coming off turn 4 take the win. Price, Jessica Zemken, Mayne, and Paul Carey would chase Way across the line.

In the Pro Stock 20 lap main, Dave Moyer would lead the opening lap only to give up the spot a lap later to Jason Rood. Rood would lead the final 19 circuits of the event, despite a late race charge by Jerry Holmes who had recovered from an early race spin to finish a close 2nd, with Mark Effner, Bill Knapp, and Bret Belden crossing in the top 5 spots.

Art Newman controlled the opening 4 laps of the 15 lap Pure Stock feature event, with 13th place starter Ron Hawker taking over the lead on lap 5. Hawker's lead short-lived however, as Russ Marsden would in his typical charge to the front, would take over on lap 7. Marsden would lead the remainder of the event, with Hawker and Newman finishing a close 2nd and 3rd. Glen Forward and Jim Thomas filled out the top 5.

Starting on the outside pole of the 15 lap IMCA Modified main event, Kevin Buff took the early lead over pole sitter Mark Chrzanowski. Charging hard from his 8th starting spot, George Catanzano moved into second by lap 4 and started running down Buff. Lap 7 was when Catanzano made his move for the top spot, leading at the stripe. Despite several cautions that allowed the field to bunch up behind him, Catanzano would never be seriously challenged for the win. Catanzano would cross in 1st, with Buff, Dave Bargabos, Bill Anderson, and Dale Caswell filling out the top 5. Catanzano stated that it won't be his last visit to victory lane.

Kevin Fassett led the opening 8 circuits of the Four Cylinder Super Stock main event, holding off the relentless charges of Chuck Powelczyk, Rich Murtaugh, and Doug Farnsworth. As lap 9 of the 15 lap event went into the books, Powelczyk was able to sneak by to take the lead and he led the remainder of the event. Fassett held on for 2nd, with Joey Delacruz, Claude Hutchings, and Farnsworth chasing.

On June 12, the "Action Track of the East" will see action again when Bishop Print Shop, Inc. present a regular show of 358-Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks, IMCA Modifieds, and Four Cylinder Super Stocks plus the Vintage Stock Car Club.
