VERNON, NY - Jamie Christian took the lead on lap 19 from John Kinsella and rode to his seventh DIRT Sportsman victory of the 2000 season at the New Utica-Rome Speedway on Sunday September 17. Other winners were Doug Emery in the ELS Sprint Cars, Jerry Holmes in the DIRT Pro Stocks, John Pietrowicz in the Pure Stocks, and A.J. Digsby in the Slingshots. Jeff Pastorella won the rained out Pure Stock feature from September 3.

John Kinsella and Tim Mayne led the 25-lap Mr. Sportsman feature down to the flags of Starter Chip Burdick, and Kinsella took the initial lead. Kinsella was way ahead, while Tim Mayne and Jeff Walton battled for the second position. On lap 7, the pair went side by side, and a lap later, Walton changed lanes, and moved past Mayne, taking over the second position. On a lap 13 restart, Jamie Christian went alongside Walton for second and took over second. Several yellows slowed the event, and on a lap 15 restart, Christian looked for the lead, as Dan Yankowski took over third from Walton. With Christian and Kinsella side by side, Yankowski now made it a three car battle for the top spot. Christian momentarily took the lead in turn three, but Kinsella pulled a slide job off turn four, keeping his lead. On lap 19, Kinsella bobbled and Christian took the lead while Yankowski taking over second. Yankowski was flying, and he wanted the lead and the $850 winner's share. A late race yellow on lap 23 slowed the drivers, causing a shootout for the big win. On the restart, Willy Decker, driving a brand new Teo Pro Car, shot himself out of a cannon, trying to get around the Kinsella machine. However, Kinsella was just too fast, and held on to the spot. Christian, who started eighth, was long gone, and he went on to his seventh Utica-Rome Sportsman victory of the season. Following Christian, it was Yankowski in second, Kinsella in third, Decker in fourth, and Tom Collins Jr. in fifth. Rounding out the top ten, it was Jeff Walton, Tim Mayne, Paul Kinney, Shawn Donath, and Ron Richardson.

Jamie Christian, Yankowski, and Kinsella won the Sportsman heat races and Brian Murphy won the Sportsman consi.

Dan Kaszubinski used the pole position to his advantage and took the early lead in the 20-lap ELS Sprint Car feature. Multiple minor cautions slowed the event, and Kaszubinski was able to keep the lead until a lap 17 restart, when he ran out of fuel. On the next restart, the new leader Tom Taber also ran out of fuel, causing another yellow flag. ELS officials decided to green, white, and checker the event, giving the win to Doug Emery. After Emery, it was John Lieto, George Suprick, John Karklin, and Rick Hart. Brian Dumigan, the ELS point leader heading into the event, finished sixth. Dumigan and Hart will share the 2000 ELS Championship.

ELS Sprint Car heat races were won by Kaszubinski, Lieto, and Emery.

Track Champion Tom Denton took the early lead in the $600 to win 25-lap Mr. Pro Stock feature, but Bret Belden was putting serious pressure on the Denton machine for the lead. On lap 6, the third place car of Brian Michels and Belden made contact, sending Belden around. Michels was sent to the rear, and both drivers continued. On the restart, Denton held his lead, but on the move was Dave Bruno, who made his first Utica-Rome start of the season in this race. Bruno was running strong, and he took the lead on lap 7. However, Jerry Holmes, who started sixth, was fast, as me moved right past Denton and took the lead from Bruno on lap 8. Several minor cautions slowed the event, and with a few laps to go, Holmes opened a huge lead. However, the battle on the track was for third spot. John Roese was running the high side and made it work to perfection, as he went from fifth to third in the final two laps. At the checkers, it was Holmes over Bruno, Roese, Jason Rood, and Dave Moyer.

Pro Stock heat wins went to Stan Clark, Frank Twing, and Denton, while George Kiskiel in his first time out in 2000 won the Pro Stock consi.

Les Lewis took the early lead in the first 15-lap Pure Stock feature, which was rained out back on September 3. Jeff Pastorella took over the top spot on lap 7, and led the rest of the way for his second victory of the season at Utica-Rome. Les Lewis, in his best career finish, was second, followed by Dave Mannise, Waylan Wilczek, and Bobby Newman. Dave Mannise won his fifth consecutive Track Championship, and his eighth overall.

John Pietrowicz, driving the Tom Hood Racing No. 17, took the early lead in the $400 to win 15-lap Mr. Pure Stock feature event. Pietrowicz was never seriously challenged and led the entire race, winning in his first appearance in several years at Utica-Rome. Rounding out the top five, it was Jeff Pastorella close behind, followed by Chad Ray, Waylan Wilczek, and Dave Mannise.

Wilczek, Ray, and Jim Thomas won the Pure Stock heats, and Bobby Newman won the Pure Stock consi.

A.J. Digsby led the entire distance of the 12-lap Senior Slingshot feature event. Rounding out the top five in the new Slingshot division, it was Track Champion Jackie Botindari, followed by J.J. Courcy, Todd Thomas, and Randy Marsh. Digbsy won the lone heat event for the Slingshots.

Coming up this Friday September 22 at Utica-Rome will be the season ending event for 2000. Scheduled is the 100-lap special for the Sunoco Race Fuels 358 Modified Super DIRT Series plus the ARANY Pro Stock Super DIRT Series, a Pure Stock feature, and a Demolition Derby. The gates will open at 4pm and racing will begin promptly at 7pm.
