VERNON, NY- Exciting DIRT Motorsports racing will continue at Utica-Rome Speedway this Sunday, May 18, when Canastota Kartway presents Turning Stone Casino Employee Night featuring the DIRT 358-Modifieds, DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks plus the one-on-one spectator races. Racing action begins at 6 p.n.
Dale Planck currently sits atop the Utica-Rome Speedway DIRT 358-Modified point standings on the strength of his dominating opening night victory. 2001 track champion Todd Burley sits in second, with suprising rookie Scott Brady, Jeff Kotary, and rookie Kevin Crave round out the top five. Defending track champion Matt Sheppard has had a rough start in defense of his title, collecting to DNF's so far this season to currently sits in 16th position. Popular Mitch Gibbs is also struggling in the early part of the season, with a fifth place finish being the highlght of his season so far at the Utica-Rome Speedway. Jim Rothwell has also scored a victory this season.
Jamie Christian and Tim Clemons have each dominated a feature event for the DIRT Sportsman so far in 2003, but mechanical failures have dropped them out of the top 5 in the point standings. Paul Carey's strong finishes have given him the point lead, with Bill Shantel Jr, newcomer John Scarborough, Jessica Zemken, and Jim Roberts currently occupy the top 5 in the track's points standings.
With the Empire Sports Network Pro Stock Super DIRT Series visiting the Rolling Wheels on the evening of May 18th, Utica-Rome Speedway officials have decided to make the speedway's event on this evening event. This will allow the drivers competing on the tour to do so without conflict and to carry the Utica-Rome Speedway banner proudly. Jerry Holmes, Bret Belden, Buddy Hencke, Eric Vanderhoof, and Wayne Archer are currently the top five in the Pro Stock point standings, with Holmes and Hencke grabbing feature wins.
Opening night winner Herm Staats sits atop the always exciting Pure Stock point standings, with Dave Pope, Waylan Wilczek, Art Newman, and Jim Thomas trailing. Thomas also has scored a feature win.
Also to run is the fan favorite one on one spectator races, which allows the fans in the stands to compete on the track surface against a fellow fan in their street vehicle. Fans who wish to participate must hold a valid driver's license, and their vehicle must be insured and registered to be allowed onto the track surface. Last year, over thirty fans competed in one night.
Located just on the outskirts of Vernon, Utica-Rome Speedway is a short distance from New York State Thruway Exit 33. Utica-Rome Speedway operates on Sunday with a normal show consisting of DIRT 358-Modifieds, DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks.
