VERNON, NY- The mighty Modifieds of DIRT Motorsports will return to Utica-Rome Speedway on Thursday, July 31 when Tracey Road Equipment and Gates Cole Insurance present the Advance Auto Parts Modified Super DIRT Series (100 laps) and a regular program for the Pro Stocks. A Victoria 200 All-Star Race qualifying spot will also be awarded for the highest finishing DIRT 358-Modified in the main event. Gates will open at 4 p.m. with time trials starting at 6:30 p.m., and racing slated to begin at 7 p.m.

Alan Johnson will visit the "Action Track of the East" as the current point leader in the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series with Billy Decker, Gary Tomkins, Tim McCreadie, Brett Hearn, Tim Fuller, and Steve Paine. Other DIRT stars expected to compete are Pat Ward, Danny Johnson, Chuck Bower, Bobby Varin, Vic Coffey, Bob McCreadie, and many others. The Utica-Rome Speedway regulars, including Dale Planck, Mitch Gibbs, Todd Burley, Matt Sheppard, Willy Decker, and more, are expected to try to defend home turf and steal a victory from the tour stars. Unadilla's Billy Decker was the last Modified winner when he took home the top honors during the Advance Auto Parts Series event at the speedway in 2001. Last year's event was cancelled due to rain. A raindate has been set for August 27 in case of inclement weather.

The Big Block Modifieds have a rich history at the Vernon speedplant as they were the headline class in the early 1980's. Jack Johnson is the all-time feature winner at the speedway with 19 victories with Alan Johnson in second with 8 wins. Dave Lape, Brett Hearn, and Kenny Tremont make up the rest of the top 5 in total wins.

A spot for the Victoria 200 All-Star race will also be awarded to the highest finishing small block powered machine to cross the line. The All-Star race gives a driver a third chance to qualify for the prestigous Dynomax Victoria 200 held each year at the Fulton Speedway. The Victoria 200 annually draws over 100 of the best 358-Modified drivers for the $20,000 to win top prize.

The DIRT Pro Stocks will also be in competition for a regular program, which consists of heats, consolations if needed, and a 15-lap main event. Jerry Holmes has proven to be the man to beat in the highly competitive Pro Stocks, but Bret Belden, Eric Vanderhoof, Bill Knapp, Chad Ray, and many more will all attempt to slow the points leader down.

Utica-Rome Speedway is easily found on Route 5 in Vernon, NY, just minutes New York State Thruway Exit 33.
