VERNON, NY- Exciting racing action continues this Sunday, August 10, when Nice n' Easy Grocery Grocery Shoppes presents a regular show of DIRT 358-Modifieds and DIRT Sportsman, plus Twin 12 lap races for the DIRT Pro Stocks, Battle of the Street Stock event for the Pure Stocks, and the makeup feature for the 358-Modifieds that was rained out this past Sunday. Gates will open at 4 p.m. with racing slated to begin at 6 p.m.
Dale Planck, of Homer, is looking to take another step towards his fifth Utica-Rome Speedway 358-Modified track championship with a solid run. Mitch Gibbs, driver of the Nice n' Easy Grocery Shoppes sponsored 2g, currently sits in second and looks to net his second Utica-Rome title. Defending track champion Matt Sheppard holds the third position, with 2001 champion Todd Burley fourth, and second year 358-Modified driver Willy Decker holding the fifth position in the point standings. Planck, Sheppard, and Burley have two wins each on the season, while Gibbs, Decker, Gus Schmidt, Jim Rothwell, and Pete Taylor have visited victory lane once.
Bill Shantel, Jr of Canastota took the point lead with his victory last week in the DIRT Sportsman, while Vermont native John Scarborough used to another solid top five finish to move into second in the point standings. Two-time and defending Sportsman champion Jamie Christian holds down the third position, with young Jessica Zemken in fourth, and Jim Roberts in fifth. Tim Clemons leads all drivers with four wins, with Shantel and Christian netting two each, and Steve Way and Zemken garnering one win each.
In the Pro Stock ranks, Jerry Holmes was untouchable when the season began but has cooled since. Holmes still holds the point lead, but second place Bret Belden has gained ground in recent weeks. Eric Vanderhoof, Buddy Hencke, and Bill Knapp fill out the rest of the top five. Holmes has four wins on the season, Jason Rood has netted two wins, while Belden, Hencke, Knapp, Joe Palmer, and Tom Denton have one each.
Jim Thomas continues to lead the way in the Pure Stocks point standings, with Art Newman, Herm Staats, Waylan Wilczek, and Dave Pope following. Chuck Cushman has been victorious three times, with Thomas, Staats, and Pope winning on two occasions, and Newman and Rick Trexler winning once. This week, Utica-Rome's best Pure Stock drivers will take on the best of the Battle of the Street Stock (BOSS) tour. Canandaigua Speedway's Nathan Peckham is the point leader for BOSS tour, with Utica-Rome Speedway's own Dave Pope sitting in fifth on the tour. Drivers from Canandaigua Speedway, Can-Am Motorsports Park, Genesee Speedway, and others are expected to compete.
