VERNON, NY -- Track officials at the DIRT Motorsports sanctioned Utica-Rome Speedway have scheduled the annual Super DIRT Series races for the 2002-race season.
On Mother's Day Sunday May 12, Utica-Rome will play host to the opening events of the Sunoco Race Fuels 358-Modified Super DIRT Series as well as the Dig Safely New York Sportsman Super DIRT Series. The 358-Modifieds will compete in a 100-lap special while the stars of the Sportsman division will have a 30-lap feature.
The next series race at Utica-Rome will be held on Thursday August 22, when the Big Block Modifieds will return to the speedway for their annual Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series 100-lap event. This will be one of the two planned midweek specials of the 2002-race season. The final midweek special will be held on Wednesday October 9 during Super DIRT Week and it will feature the Empire Super Sprint Tour 2002.
The biggest and most anticipated race of the season at Utica-Rome is set for Sunday September 15. The "New Yorker 150", a part of the Sunoco Race Fuels 358-Modified Super DIRT Series, is the event title, and a unique event it will be.
The "New Yorker 150" will be in Twin 75-lap segments, with the first race scheduled to be run on the regular 1/2-mile and the second feature on the inner 3/8-mile now currently being constructed. That's two different races on two different tracks at the same speedway on the same night!
Drivers will have to race all-out in each race to acquire Super DIRT Series points, as the points will be determined by the average finish over the two races. The overall "New Yorker 150" winner will have the highest average finish. More details on the "New Yorker 150" scheduled for September 15, 2002 will be released in the near future, but it promises to be one of the most talked-about races of the DIRT Motorsports circuit. The Automotive Recyclers Association of New York Pro Stock Super DIRT Series will also compete in a special 25-lap event.
The 2002-racing season at Utica-Rome Speedway will commence on Sunday May 5 with the 41st anniversary season opener featuring the DIRT 358-Modifieds, DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks.
