Utica-Rome Speedway LLC releases 2002 schedule of events
VERNON, NY -- Track officials at Utica-Rome Speedway, LLC., have released an ambitious 21-event schedule for the 2002 race season, which will mark the first year under the leadership of rookie promoter Tom Cole.
Weekly Sunday night racing at the popular and historic half-mile will begin on May 5 and continue through September 15, with the season closing on Wednesday October 9. In DIRT Motorsports sanctioned racing action each Sunday at 6pm sharp will be the 358-Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks.
The 41st anniversary year of stock car racing at Utica-Rome will kickoff on Sunday May 5 and will feature a 40-lap Icebreaker event for the DIRT 358-Modifieds, which will be a Super DIRT Week 358-Modified Championship qualifier. Also in action will be the DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks, and the entire race program that will begin a new era at the track will be sponsored by GATES-COLE INSURANCE.
Mother's Day, Sunday May 12, will be the traditional beginning of the summer-long Super DIRT Series for 358-Modifieds and Sportsman and it will mark the first special show of the 2002 season at Utica-Rome. NICE N EASY GROCERY SHOPPES and F.X. CAPRARA CAR COMPANIES will present the kickoff of the Turning Stone Casino 358-Modified Super DIRT Series with a 100-lap special event as well as the Sunoco Race Fuels Sportsman Super DIRT Series with a 30-lap affair. All the top stars of the DIRT Motorsports circuit will be on hand for this special attraction, with gates opening at 3pm, time trials at 5:30pm, and racing at 6pm.
May 19 will feature a regular program, but on May 26, Utica-Rome will celebrate the Memorial Weekend with a special NICE N EASY GROCERY SHOPPES 50-lap championship grind for the DIRT 358-Modifieds. Also on the race card will be the Sportsman, Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks plus a $500 to win Demolition Derby.
The month of June at Utica-Rome will feature four regular shows, which are scheduled for CANASTOTA KART SPEEDWAY night on June 2, BIG FROG 104 Night on June 9, June 16, June 23, and June 30. PEPSI-COLA, the official soft drink of Utica-Rome, will present the races on June 16, while SKIP'S TRAILER SALES / ROTHWELL'S USED AUTO SALES will sponsor the action on June 23. Special attractions scheduled to date for June are one on one spectator races on June 9, while WALTON'S FARM AND AUTO will present Student Night on June 30.
July begins with a bang on July 7 with the Independence Weekend Spectacular featuring Twin 20-lap features for the DIRT Sportsman and a huge fireworks display following the completion of racing. Also in action in a regular show will be the DIRT 358-Modifieds, DIRT Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks.
July 14 will feature a regular show with one on one spectator races, and July 21 will be yet another routine Sunday race card, with NICE N EASY GROCERY SHOPPES set to sponsor the racing action. July 28 will indeed be a special show, with the popular Family Autograph Night where fans can see the stars and cars of Utica-Rome Speedway, LLC up close and personal in a special autograph session.
Without a doubt, the month of August will be busy, with the first midweek special of the 2002 season set for Thursday August 22. The Big Block Modifieds of the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series will roll into town for a special 100-lap affair sponsored by TRACEY ROAD EQUIPMENT / FREIGHTLINER SELECTRUCKS. The 358-Modifieds will also race in the 100-lapper, and a qualifying spot for the Fulton Speedway Victoria 200 will be given out to the highest finishing 358-driver. Also in action will be the DIRT Pro Stock division. Gates for this special event will open at 4pm, with time trials beginning at 6:30pm, and racing taking the green at 7pm.
The month will be kicked off on Sunday August 4, with a regular race program featuring the 3rd Annual Night of Legends Reunion and NYSSCA Safety Awards Night. On August 11, the Pro Stock division will be featured with Twin 15's, while the rest of the divisions compete in a normal show on WILBER-DUCK CHEVY BUICK Night. August 18 will feature the third spectator race of the season with yet another regular show of professional DIRT Motorsports sanctioned racing. The final night of 358-Modified points is set for August 25, while the other divisions will race that evening in a regular points event.
September at Utica-Rome Speedway only has two race events scheduled but they could very well be the must see shows of the 2002-season. The lightning fast Empire Super Sprints as well as the Central New York Mini-Sprints will invade the speedway on September 1 for the Labor Day Weekend Spectacular, which will also be the final night of points for DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks.
The 358-Modifieds will not be in action for the September 1 show, but Utica-Rome race fans will have one more chance to see the headline division in action on Sunday September 15. F.X. CAPRARA CAR COMPANIES will present the second Turning Stone Casino 358-Modified Super DIRT Series 100-lap affair of the 2002 season. The top stars of the 358-Modified division will all be on hand to attempt a victory lane visit and bragging rights as the last winner of the year. Also in action will be the Hoosier Racing Tire Pro Stock Super DIRT Series in a 25-lap all-star event. After the races, the final $500 to win Demolition Derby of the year will be held on the frontstretch.
The 2002 Utica-Rome season has been extended by one race, and will be held as a satellite race to the nationally recognized Super DIRT Week, held in Syracuse. Wednesday October 9 is the date, and it will feature the final point race of the 39-race Empire Super Sprint tour. Also in action in the NICE N EASY GROCERY SHOOPES Super DIRT Week Special will be the DIRT Pro Stocks and Pure Stocks with gates opening at 5pm, with racing taking the green at 7pm.
