Utica-Rome 358-Modified Points To End One Week Early On August 26

VERNON, NY - Track officials at Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon recently announced that the battle for the lucrative DIRT 358-Modified track championship will end on Sunday August 26.

This is one week earlier than the traditional Labor Day Weekend final points show for all DIRT sanctioned tracks, and it will only apply for the DIRT 358-Modifieds at Utica-Rome. The final night of points at Utica-Rome for the DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Slingshots will be set for one week later on September 2, when the 358-Modifieds will run a non-point event. This move was made to allow Utica-Rome DIRT 358-Modified teams to head north to Canada for the Sunoco Race Fuels 358-Modified Super DIRT Series at Cornwall Speedway in Ontario.

Current Utica-Rome DIRT 358-Modified points leader Todd Burley from Spencerport is one of the hot shoes on the Super DIRT Series and looks to carry his momentum of three early season wins at Utica-Rome throughout the remainder of the season on the series. Burley has been a staunch Super DIRT Series supporter over the years, and if he wins his first career Utica-Rome track championship, he may use that for bonus points towards the coveted Mr. DIRT 358-Modified title. Utica-Rome, currently in its third consecutive season under the DIRT Motorsports banner, has never had a Super DIRT Series champion as one of its regular weekly drivers.

Runner up in Utica-Rome points at the halfway point of the season, the legendary Jack Johnson of Duanesburg had to miss the Utica-Rome event on July 8 due to a Big Block series race in Canada. However, nothing could be done to make that night a non-points event because Utica-Rome is a Small Block track. Ironically, the points ending a week early will work out well for the 1982 Big Block track champion, who will race at an Advance Auto Parts Big Block Modified Super DIRT Series event at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway in Weedsport on September 2. The ageless Johnson will represent Utica-Rome in the Sunoco/A-Plus 358-Modified championship 150 at Super DIRT Week on October 6 in Syracuse.

Currently tied for third in Utica-Rome DIRT 358-Modified points are Gus Schmidt Jr. of Liverpool and former four-time track champion Paul Jensen of Edmeston. Fifth in points is tied as well, with Jason Barney of Constantia and the defending track champion, Ron Holmes of Oneida.

Rounding out the top ten in Utica-Rome DIRT 358-Modified points is Super DIRT Series sophomore Ryan Baye of Constantia in seventh, Steve Hulsizer of Brewerton in eighth, John Ramsey of Floyd in ninth, and popular J.J. Michaels of Baldwinsville in tenth.

Just over 100 points separates tenth from first in the point standings, and as the season heads down the homestretch, drivers will be racing extra hard to try to earn every point they can. It’s going to be an all out battle right down to the wire! With some of the best 358-Modified drivers on the DIRT circuit making their Sunday night home at Utica-Rome Speedway, you just never know who will end up in victory lane when the checkered falls.

Utica-Rome Speedway holds DIRT Motorsports sanctioned stock car racing every Sunday evening from early May to mid-September featuring the DIRT 358-Modifieds, DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Slingshots. Special events during the season include the Sunoco Race Fuels 358-Modified Super DIRT Series, Advance Auto Parts Big Block Modified Super DIRT Series, as well as the alcohol powered Empire Super Sprints. Racing each Sunday begins at 6pm.
