HEJNA TURNS LUCK AROUND, STRIKES GOLD AT HANCOCK COUNTY

BRITT, Iowa (May 20, 2005) -- Mother Nature kept her distance this week, and the third thrilling night of the 2005 season at the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Hancock County Speedway made it in the books on West Hancock County Ambulance Service Night.

When Mother Nature had been kind to the Speedway, mechanical gremlins had not been so nice to Al Hejna. This past Friday, however, things were different as the Clear Lake veteran beat the weather, beat the mechanical problems and beat an all-star field of USRA Modifieds to take his first win of the season at the Britt, Iowa, facility.

From his outside front row starting spot, Jeremy Mills of Garner grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag. On lap 4 of the 25-lapper, Mills bobbled between turns 3-4, opening the door for Jeff Schluetter to take the point. Schluetter paced the field for the next four laps until he spun in turn 1 to bring out a caution flag and end his chance at victory.

From there on, it was all "Big Al" as he held on through a late-race caution, and held off fellow O'Reilly USMTS star Kelly Shryock of Fertile to the checkers. Mills took third after giving up the runner-up spot to Shryock with four laps to go. Todd Hanson of Clear Lake and Burt's Rick Schuller completed the top-5.

Heat wins went to Jeff Feaster of Dakota City and Jimmy Davis of Medford, Minn.

In USRA Stock Car action, Chad Palmer of Renwick led the first 14 of 20 laps before a bobble in turn 2 opened the door for eighth-starting Larry Portis of Nora Springs to take the top spot. From there, Portis paced Palmer to the finish line to pick up the $400 top prize. Kevin Hoeft of Garner, Jeff Vsetecka of Charles City and Wade Eastman of Nora Springs finished third through fifth.

Heat wins went to last week's feature winner, Jeff Dolphin of Forest City, and Eastman.

Playing the lead role late in the race proved to be a bad sign in the USRA Hobby Stock main event too. Hometown favorite Randy Hadacek looked to be on his way to his first win of the season as he led the first 14½ laps of the 15-lap main event, but a miscue on the final lap was all the opening that Humboldt's Calvin Lange needed as he leaped past Hadacek for the top spot and led him to the stripe. Third through fifth went to John Madson of Britt, Chad Gentz of Forest City and Gary Lalor Jr. of Eagle Grove.

Heat wins went to Hadacek and Lalor.

In USRA B-Mod action, Travis Lain of Titonka swept the events with a heat race win and a victory in the "A" main. Kevin Knudson of Clear Lake finished second, with Jared Boumeester of Waseca, Minn. coming home in third place. Fourth went to Mike Schroeder of Lone Rock, while Lehigh's George Gilliland completed the top-5 finishers.

Heat wins went to Lain and Jake Simpson of Algona.

With his win in the Hornet division, Alex Yohn became the second driver from Clear Lake to visit victory lane Friday night, and also became the first driver in any class to win his second feature race of the season. Greg Birkhofer of Garner, Brandon Allen of Belmond, Charles Gardner of Kanawha and Travis Nelson of Garner rounded out the top-5.

Heat wins went to Yohn and Allen.

The USRA Casey's General Stores Championship Series continues next Friday at the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Hancock County Speedway. For more information call 515-832-7944, or check us out online at www.hancockcospeedway.com.
