Longs, SC-Everybody in the Hooters Pro Cup Series let out a collective cheer when Danny O'Quinn Jr. signed with Roush Racing last week. But Pro Cup regular George Brunnhoelzl's applause may have been a little louder.
With O'Quinn moving on, Brunnhoelzl III will take over the Tucson sponsorship in the Southern Division of the HPC Series at South Georgia Motorsports Park.
"The Renegade Tobacco Company was pleased to hear that Danny had been offered an opportunity to advance his career," said Calvin Phelps, President of the Renegade Tobacco Company. "But we knew that the Hooters Pro Cup Series had other young, talented competitors that could benefit from Tucson's sponsorship. We are very excited about sponsoring George Brunnhoelzl III and confident that George and Tucson will have a great racing partnership."
It's a partnership that Brunnhoelzl believes will flourish during his second season of Pro Cup.
"Everybody knows that you need sponsors to race," said Brunnhoelzl III. "And the more sponsorship you have, the faster you can go. We're real happy to have the Tucson sponsorship. With Tucson's help, we feel we can be up front every week."
During his rookie season, Brunnhoelzl showed he could run up front during many races, but it didn't reflect in his finishing position.
"We had a lot of motor problems last season, and that was part of the reason for our up-and-down year," said Brunnhoelzl. "We learned a lot during our first season. This year, we're confident that we're going to be up front."
In addition to Tucson's sponsorship, Brunnhoelzl's confidence is also bolstered by a new crew chief and engine builder.
Caesar Morgan will be the head wrench on the No. 20s Tucson Ford. Morgan, from Woodstock, Maine, worked as a rear tire changer and shock specialist for BACE Motorsports in the past.
Brunnhoelzl's power will be supplied by Glad Precision. Though it will be powerplant maker's first foray into Pro Cup, Brunnhoelzl knows what to expect. During his years as Modified campaigner, Brunnhoelzl used Glad Precision engines.
With a new sponsor, crew chief and engine, Brunnhoelzl's cheers may grow louder each race.
