Southern National Speedway to Host Hooters ProCup Series

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Southern National Speedway might be just the medicine the doctor ordered for Jason Sarvis. Sarvis, the 2002 USAR Hooters ProCup Series champion, has endured a challenging season adjusting to a new team and playing catch up all season long driving for Spencer Motor Ventures and owner Jimmy Spencer. He returns to Southern National Speedway for the Hooters ProCup 250 presented by Tucson and hopes his season can get a push with another win at the track.

Sarvis missed the season opening race in February and has pulled double duty driving in the Southern Division and serving as crew chief for Jimmy Spencer, Jr. in the Northern Division all season long. Sarvis hasn't recorded a win yet in 2004, but feels his chances are pretty good at Southern National Speedway.

"I love racing at Kenly (Southern National Speedway)," said Sarvis. "It is a unique track with certain characteristics that make it different from any other track on our schedule. I just hope we get the race in at night this time."

Sarvis was making reference to last year's race at the speedway which was rained out on Saturday night and forced to run on Sunday afternoon under temperatures approaching 100 degrees.

"That might have been the hottest I have ever been inside a race car," Sarvis said. "I was so tired I wasn't thinking about anything the last 20 laps but just getting the race over with. My crew was talking to me and I wasn't responding...I guess they were afraid I was going to pass out from the heat."

The Hooters ProCup 250 presented by Tucson will be race #10 of 13 for the Southern Division in the Series and should give a clear indication after the race which teams will be among the top contenders for the top seed in from the Southern Division entering the Championship Series in the fall.

Clay Rogers has enjoyed a lead in the point standings since his season-opening win at USA International Speedway, but three-time Series champion Bobby Gill has returned to old form and has already collected three wins during the first half of the Southern Division schedule and is poised to make a run at the top seed. That could start at Southern National where Gill won in 2002.
