Pete Knight Racing Driver Hopes To Pad USAR Hooters Pro Cup Southern Division Point's Lead
Mooresville, NC (July 14, 2008) -- After finishing no worse than second in his last four USAR Hooters Pro Cup events - including wins at Myrtle Beach (SC) and Milwaukee (WI) -- you'd think Mark McFarland would be basking in the glow of the incredible hot streak. [Inside%2039%201320.jpg] According to the driver of the No. 81s Sears Auto Centers/Knight's Companies Chevy Monte Carlo, he's not looking back at all. Instead, he's got his eyes firmly set on the future and even bigger accomplishments.
"Winning the regular season Pro Cup Southern Division championship would be awesome," said McFarland. "To go into the Championship Series with a little lead would be crucial, especially because there are only four races in the championshipthis year. Doing well in the final three Southern Division races is big for us. We have a pretty busy schedule coming up because we are also going to run a couple more Northern Division races. We have a team that's prepared. We just have to keep our equipment together and keep doing what we've been doing."
McFarland will try to do just that when he takes the green flag this Saturday in the Crane Cams 250 USAR Southern Division event at Southern National Speedway in Kenly, NC. According to the Winchester, VA driver, the half-mile Southern National oval is one of the most challenging on the Pro Cup circuit.
"We ran there last year on the new pavement and the track is really fast," said McFarland. "Southern National is banked a lot more than most of the tracks we race at. It's a pretty exciting track to race at now because it is so fast. You turn 15-second laps on a half-mile track. That's pretty fast."
McFarland has been up to the challenge at Southern National in the past scoring his first-ever Pro Cup victory at the track in 2005 while driving for Jr. Motorsports. Last year, the Pete Knight Racing driver finished second in the USAR Southern Division clash.
"We led the race for a long time last year," said McFarland. "Unfortunately, Michael Ritch got by us at the end of the race for the win. It was still a good finish, but we were disappointed we didn't win."
McFarland, who is coming off a second-place finish in last week's USAR Hooters Pro Cup Northern Division race at Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, VA, leaves no doubt what the goals and expectations are this time around at Southern National.
"We go to the track to win every race," said McFarland. "It's fun going to the track each week because we have such a good group of people. It's always fun to run good. We're just so proud of the team we've built with Pete. We have a great sponsor in Sears Auto Center. They help us out a lot. We just want to give them and Pete Knight Racing the best finishes possible."
McFarland and his No. 81s Sears Auto Center/Knight's Companies Chevy will continue their quest for the 2008 USAR Hooters Pro Cup Southern Division championship at Southern National Speedway this Saturday, July 19. The Crane Cams 250 will take the green flag at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
