Gordon, Kile Looking to Clinch Miller Lite 250 on Tap for SoBo
Myrtle Beach, S.C.--If Benny Gordon can get out of the Miller Lite 250 at South Boston (Va.) Speedway on Saturday, August 9 without allowing Gary St. Amant to pull within 100 points, he will clinch his fourth Sears Auto Center Northern Division title. But that's not on the DuBois, Pa., native's mind.
"I've got some unfinished business at South Boston," said Gordon, who finished second to Dan Abold in the season-opening, rain-shortened event at SoBo. "My goal is to win, because we should have won the first race."
Gordon, who started from the Awesome Awnings Pole in the first race at South Boston, decided to pit on Lap 17 and gave the lead to Abold, who started ninth in the 32-car field.
Gordon quickly charged back to the front, trying feverishly to retake the lead before the rain came. Gordon ducked under Abold several times, but the 3-time Northern Division champ couldn't make it past Abold before persistent showers forced the race to be called on Lap 161.
"I'm still not over that yet," said Gordon, driver of the No. 66n Samuel Metals Ford. "I felt like I had dominant car there, and we only had to pass one more car to pass and we would've won. I'm excited to get back there."
Besides vindication, Gordon has plenty of other reasons to be excited about returning to America's Hometown Track. If he clinches the regular-season title at SoBo, Gordon will pick up a $20,000 bonus and a 25-point advantage heading into the Championship Series. If he goes onto win the event, he could surpass $90,000 in winnings in just eight races.
Rookie Mikey Kile will also be looking to capture some extra cash as well. Kile, driver of the No. 65s VisViva Energy Drink Chevrolet, can clinch the Miller Lite Rookie of the Year title in the Northern Division by finishing in the top 20. If he does so, Kile will take home a $10,000 bonus.
With the point races almost a forgone conclusion, fans will likely see a go-for-broke mentality throughout the field during the 250-lap event, especially among the veterans.
In six regular season races, there have been four first-time winners in the Northern Division. And with Gordon winning the other two, drivers like Jeff Agnew, Gary St. Amant, Jay Fogleman and Brandon Ward are on the verge of being shutout during the regular season.
The Miller Lite 250 is slated for a start time of 7 p.m. Front gates open at SBS at 3 p.m., just in time for Allison Legacy Series qualifying. Awesome Awnings Pole Qualifying for the Hooters Pro Cup Series will start at 4:30 p.m. Fans will be permitted on the front stretch for the Wraps INK Autograph Session at 5:45 p.m. and prerace ceremonies will begin at 6:30 p.m. Following the Miller Lite 250, the Allison Legacy Series will compete in a 50-lap feature.
