Huffman set to defend title with Xtra Motorsports

Longs, SC -- Ending months of speculation, Shane Huffman and Xtra Motorsports announced today that they would defend their 2003 Hooters ProCup Championship. And they will do it together.

"We've decided after a long winter that this team deserves a chance to defend their title," said team co-owner Rhett Durham. "This has been a trying time for me and my partner [Carroll Watts], and this is a huge relief. We're going to run the No. 84 car and Shane will be the driver. The staff and most of the crew will be back.

"I'm proud of the way the relationship between Shane and I held up under the stress," said Durham. "I'm excited, and now we can start focusing on the racetrack."

Huffman's focus is already on the racetrack. The Hickory, N.C., driver returned to the Xtra Motorsports' shop on Thursday and started prepping cars for the season opener at USA International Speedway on Feb. 28.

"I feel like the weight of the world has been lifted off my shoulders," said Huffman. "We're back for 2004."

Now that Huffman is back, his attention has quickly turned to getting back to where Xtra Motorsports was last season.

"We've been working on these cars all along," said Huffman. "We're not testing yet, but we're not behind. We'll carry two cars to Lakeland that will be ready to race."

The team is currently seeking sponsorship for the No. 84 Ford for the 2004 season, but Xtra Motorsports has no plans to run a part-time schedule.

"We are planning on running the full season with Shane, giving him the same equipment and backing that he had last season," said Durham.
