4-26-97 Dempsey Outpaces USAR/SARA Modified Field at USA by Gene Crane Lakeland, FL Dwayne Dempsey paced the 25 car USAR/SARA Modified field back to the checkers Friday night at USA International Speedway. The St. Petersburg resident assumed command on lap number seven and remained out front and unchallenged over the next 43 laps. Dempsey was able to avoid a lap one crash on the backstretch which involved then race leader and pole starter D J Hoelzle and sent many others to the pits for repairs. Butch Yoakum was posted as the leader for the opening seven circuits around the ¾ mile high banked speedway. He advanced to the top spot after running second to Hoelzle. Yoakum efforts for the evening lasted only seven laps when the powerplant in the number 47 expired handing the lead to Dempsey. Red Vann, who was also involved in the lap one accident recovered to score a third place run behind Rob Partelo. Vann’s mount was strong all evening and enabled him to work his way through the field after restarting from the back of the pack. The charge to the front seemed to be a reward to the Vann crew after they borrowed a motor from Greg Edwards and completed the exchange just in time to qualify. The second position seemed to be the position to avoid during the first half of the event. Track record holder for the modifieds, Jerry Symons was running second when a bracket broke in the rear of his machine sending him to the pits for repairs. Five circuits later Greg Edwards, who had advanced from third following the Symons misfortune, saw his chances go up in smoke when the engine blew in his number four. Rob Partelo was not allowed an opportunity to relax after he assumed the second position on lap 16. Fast qualifier Steve Hauser Sr. pressured the 1996 series champion until the closing stages. Red Vann passed Hauser during the final laps dropping Hauser to fourth at the finish. Rounding out the top five was the highest rookie finisher Billy Mowery . Dempsey’s win makes him the first two time winner in 1997 USAR/SARA Modified action. The points battle will again see a shuffle as second through fourth in points began the night separated by a spread of five points.
