Short night for Thompson at Salem

Salem, In. June 23, 2003. The sixth stop in the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series was held this past Saturday night at the high banked half mile in Salem Indiana. Looking to rebound from their accident-filled run two weeks prior to this event, Robbie Thompson and his Mihalco Motorsports crew members hit the track in southern Indiana for morning practice. During the first hour of practice the #5 Ford Taurus engine developed a problem leaving it only running on seven cylinders. Forced to the pits to diagnose the problem, the team lost out on valuable track time. With the race's qualifying session looming, the crew found and fixed the problem and had the car ready, qualifying 15th.

It only took about 10 seconds into the race to realize that Robbie's string of bad luck would continue. On the opening lap, Robbie and another car made contact battling for position, sending the car backwards down the backstretch heavily damaging the back of the car. With the caution flag displayed, Robbie brought the car onto pit road for repairs. The green flag was soon displayed and with hard work from the crew, Robbie was kept on the lead lap.

After settling in after the restart, Robbie found that he had a very loose race car, a result of damage from the lap 1 crash. On lap 75 the car broke loose in turn three and spun, collecting two other cars, bringing an end to the night for Robbie, finishing 21st. "I am so disappointed with our results tonight" Robbie stated after the race. "Once we lost our rear spoiler in the lap one wreck, the car was a handful. I hope we can get a little luck on our side so we can prove that we are better that what we have shown so far"

The team now looks forward to the next event July 4th in Xenia Ohio (just south of Dayton) at the Kil-Kare Speedway. Mihalco Motorsports would like to thank the following companies for their continued support, Shear Metal Products, TTR Transport, SM Freight, Fans Motorsports, SM Repairs, Leaf Raceware, and Racing Radios.
