Turner Motorsports Has Day Go in Two Directions at Peachstate
Helton Is Strong Early, But Gets in Wreck While Buescher Flies Late in the Race
CONCORD, NC (June 5, 2007) -- Turner Motorsports teammates Gary Helton and James Buescher had opposite types of races when the USAR Pro Cup Series visited Peachstate Speedway (GA). Helton's started out well, but ended with bad luck taking away a strong finish. Meanwhile, Buescher's race got better as it went along the way.
The final result was that Buescher finished 12th and Helton finished 26th in the Aaron's 199 event.
Helton started the race in the fifth position and ran with the leaders for the first 40 laps. He stayed in the top 10 after that, but got caught in a spin with Bill Bigley, Jr. on lap 172. The damage to Helton's car knocked him from the event and back to his 26th-place finish.
"We ran five laps at 240 [degrees]," said Helton. "It kept pushing water out of it so we just called it a day."
Buescher started 18th, but fell down a lap early with handling problems. He marched back though to run with the leaders. Unable to race his way back on the lead lap, Buescher was awarded the lucky dog pass late in the race. He finished on the lead lap in 12th.
"The car was pretty good the start of the race," said Buescher. "I think we passed about five cars in the first 20 laps or so. I think we had some mismatched numbers on our tires. We just kept falling back and falling back and ended up a lap down.
"When we did come in and finally got tires, the car was much better. I could run with (eventual race winner Clay) Rogers. I had to lift so I didn't go right around him. I was trying to save my tires for later on. We then got the lucky dog with about 30 to go and I got back up as far as I could get before I burned the tires off again."
Buescher was very happy with the handling of his car near the conclusion of the event.
"I was the only one out there that could run on the bottom and be competitive; I didn't see anyone else that could do that," said Buescher. "That is how we got back up at the end of the race. I think we could have run top five or top 10; maybe we could have won. I was as fast, if not faster, then the leaders on new tires."
Meanwhile, Helton is just happy with the way that the Turner Motorsports team is coming together as the 2007 season trucks along.
"We've got a few more people helping us, trying to change things up a little," added Helton. "We qualified good and ran good during the race but circumstances put us towards the back. We're going to run good at Myrtle Beach.
"We're getting really close to were we need to be. The teams are working good together and we have a great motor. It's just a matter of getting just a little bit of luck. We get some luck and we are going to be there."
The USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series will be back in action on June 23rd at Myrtle Beach Speedway (SC). All USAR Hooters Pro Cup Races can be seen on SPEED Channel.
