Gill returns to victory lane.
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FL - Bobby Gill rebounded from a rare DNF at Five Flags Speedway two weeks ago to win the Advance Discount Auto Parts 250 presented by Lucas Oil Products Saturday night at New Smyrna Speedway. Gill outlasted Shane Huffman by .120 seconds to collect his 33rd career win in the USAR Hooters ProCup Series.
Mario Gosselin returned to action and finished a solid third with Mardy Lindley fourth. Danny O'Quinn, Jr. continued his impressive start to the season with his first career top-five finish in only his third race in the Series to complete the top-five. O'Quinn, Jr. has collected two top-10 finishes in three races so far in 2003 and collected the $1,000 Miller Lite Rookie of the Race Award Saturday night.
Jason Sarvis, the 2002 USAR Hooters ProCup Series champion, won the Advance Auto Parts Pole Award but it was Lindley who jumped to the lead from the outside and led the first 65 laps of the race. Clay Rogers, in his first start of the season, jumped into the lead on lap 66 and remained out front until Billy Mowery assumed the top spot on lap 110.
Mowery led at lap 125 to collect the $1,000 Lucas Oil Products Halfway Leader Award and gave up the lead to Gill on lap 129. Gill stayed in the lead until lap 241 when Gosselin led for one lap but Gill quickly took the lead on lap 242 and remained out front the rest of the race.
Gill qualified 16th and advanced 15 positions during the race to collect the $500 Hard Charger Award.
The race was slowed 11 times by caution for 65 laps with three red flags given to the field. Drivers forced to end their night early due to accidents were David Pletcher, Mowery, Luke Hill, David Stover, Mikie Stafford, Mike Williams, Vince Fanello and Tony Amico.
Huffman remains atop the USAR Hooters ProCup Series Southern Division standings with 450 points. Stacy Puryear remains second with 404 and Joe Gaita sits third with 398 points. Toby Porter and Steven Christian complete the top-five with 383 and 370 points, respectively.
The USAR Hooters ProCup Series Southern Division will return to action on Friday, April 18th when they visit Ace Speedway in Altamahaw, NC. The Hooters ProCup 250 presented by Dave's Discount Furniture will be the first race in North Carolina this season for the Series.
