LaGrange, IN -- 17-year-old rookie standout, Joel Kauffman, continued his bad luck streak at Myrtle Beach Speedway last Saturday evening during the running of the Mark Brooks Memorial Bi-Lo 250. Kauffman qualified his unsponsored Chevrolet 12th and finished the event in 15th place, 2 laps down to race winner, Benny Gordon.
"I thought our car would be better than it was, especially on longer runs," remarked Kauffman. "I wasn't to worried about qualifying 12th because I thought we would be better than some of them in front of us as the race went on. I guess I was wrong. We just missed the setup somewhere." Added Kauffman.
The team was looking for improvement over the first two Championship series events where they have finished 33rd at Winchester after being involved in an early race crash and 18th at Jennerstown where they found a problem with a right rear shock after the race. While 15th is actually an improvement on paper it is far from what Kauffman and team hoped for.
"We are a good team and we have good equipment," remarked Kauffman. "We are just missing something small that is putting us behind. We will rebound from this, good teams always do." Concluded Kauffman.
Kauffman was also involved in a late race incident when the #57 car of Joe Harrison, Jr. spun in front of Kauffman and sent both cars into the turn 1 wall. Kauffman's car received minor damage and was able to finish the remaining 8 laps of the event.
The team will head next to Peach State Speedway for a one-day test session on Friday, October 24th. The Dan Duncan Memorial Naturally Fresh Foods 250 presented by Commerce Chrysler will be run on Sunday, November 2nd. The show begins on Saturday, November 1st, when teams will practice and qualify for Sunday's race. Kauffman's Chevrolet will once again be unsponsored for the event as the team looks for primary sponsorship for the 2004 season. For more information on Joel Kauffman or Team L.A.
