MOORESVILLE, NC (March 18, 2004) -- Every race car driver wishes for that big, breakout season that launches their career into the next stratosphere. Well, Joel Kauffman envisions 2004 being his year. And the LA West Luxury Vehicles team has pulled out all the stops to help him accomplish that. The 18-year-old sensation and his team have hooked up with one of the best in the business, veteran NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series crew chief Timmy Kohuth, to lead their newly-based Mooresville, NC, team toward the 2004 USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series championship.

"I'm really excited to work with someone like Timmy," said Kauffman, last year's Pro Cup Northern Division Rookie of the Year. "He knows what he is doing and that is going to be a big relief. He knows these types of cars from being involved with NASCAR for so many years, so I think he will bring a lot to our team. We have the best cars money can buy, the best engines money can buy and with Timmy, there is no reason we shouldn't be able to contend for several race wins this year."

Kohuth has 18 years of racing experience and spent the last several years serving as general manager and crew chief for Ultra Motorsports' Craftsman Truck Series effort in Mooresville (NC). He worked with several of today's top drivers while at Ultra, including Ted Musgrave, Mike Wallace, Jason Leffler and Nextel Cup Series rookie Scott Riggs. Kohuth has a shop in Mooresville's Lakeside Business Park, which will serve as the team's new race shop.

"When we decided to make a crew chief change and agreed to work with Timmy, we decided that it was probably in my best interest as a race car driver to move the entire operation down into the heart of everything that is stock car racing. I've been wanting to come down here for a while, but only now is it the right time to finally do it."

Despite moving the entire operation to North Carolina, Kauffman and the team still plan to run the entire Northern Division of the Hooters Pro Cup Series in 2004. The team will also run selected Southern races as well. Of course the entire season builds up to the Four Champions Championship Series to round out the year. The team will kick off the season in a couple weeks when the Pro Cup Series holds a private tire test at Mansfield Motorsports Park (OH) for all the Northern Divisions teams that wish to participate.

"We have high expectations for this year," added Kauffman. "We are getting lots of support from a lot of people, so there is no excuse why we can't go out there and be a contender to win and be on the pole each race. Last year, I hadn't been on most of the tracks; this year, I will have that experience already, so I will have less to learn when we visit them again.

"I think we will also have an advantage when it comes to the new radial tires that the series introduced this year. I raced three ASA races on the radials in 2002 and Timmy has a bunch of experience with the radial tires from all of his time in NASCAR. We think getting an advantage on the radials will be the deciding factor in winning the first couple of races.

"I would really like to go out there and win the Northern Division Championship. That would put us in a good position to be able to win the overall championship during the five championship races. You really have to have your stuff together to win in this series and I think we have that this year. You also have to have a little bit of racing luck, of course, and we hope to have that too."

Kauffman and Team LA West Racing will make an all-out onslaught on the Pro Cup Series championship in 2004. However, they are still looking for marketing partners to help them in their quest. For inquiries, call the team at 704-622-7065 and be sure to visit joelkauffman.com for more information.
