Jack Hobgood gets 14th and 2nd this weekend
April 5, 2005- Hobgood Motorsports battled their way from 25th to fourteenth during the "BF Goodrich Tires 250" at Greenville Pickens Speedway on Saturday. In the first round of practice Jake Hobgood posted 10th with his best time at 21.110 seconds and a speed of 85.268 mph. Topping the chart was Bobby Gill at a time of 20.729 and a speed of 86.835 mph.
Improvements were made throughout practice sessions and by the final round Jake had posted a 21.022 second time at a speed of 85.625 mph. Qualifying efforts brought the best time of the day for Jake and his team at 20.951, landing him a 25th place starting position. He knew he'd have to pick his way to the front.
He climbed to 14th before coming in for tires a second time on lap 120. Jake's brother, Justin, brought a crew with him from Charlotte to handle Jake's stops. The crew did a super job gaining him several spots in the pits putting Hobgood back on the track in 12th.
After the first lap out of the pits a loose condition was apparent and by lap 174, Jake was passed by the leaders. Lap 191 brought a tap from behind, which sent Jake's Ford Taurus spinning. Hobgood brought the car under control and dashed to the pits to survey damages, Jake's crew decided to pull a rubber out to tighten the car. The rubber wouldn't budge however which cost them valuable time and a lost lap. Returning to competition, Jake took up the 15th place position on the track and battled the loose condition for the duration of the race in which he finished 14th.
This week the Hobgoods will take home 2nd. Their son Jacob Alexander was born the day after the race and joins his sister at home. "I hoped he would wait to come till after the race at Greenville-Pickens," said Hobgood.
Jake Hobgood will take the track to race in the next USAR Hooters Pro Cup Southern Division race scheduled for Peach State Speedway in Jefferson, Georgia on April 16th.
