Second-Place Finish at Concord Speedway Vaults Drew Herring into Pro Cup Title Contention; Benson, North Carolina, Racer Third in USARacing Pro Cup Series Championship Points
CONCORD, NC (September 8, 2009) -- With the regular season of USARacing Pro Cup Series competition in the books, Drew Herring set his focus on the last four races of the season, the Championship Series, in hopes of claiming his first Pro Cup Series Championship. That title chase started at Concord Speedway (NC) this past weekend, and after 250 laps of racing, Herring was able to drive his #22 BTS Tire & Wheel Distributors Ford Fusion to a second-place finish and, more importantly, put him third in series points, only 50 points back of the leader.
After just missing the pole position by one spot, Herring started the race from the outside pole and paced himself during the long event. After making pit stops, Herring worked his way slowly back up through the field to the rear bumper of series points leader Clay Rogers. Even though he had a few opportunities to take the top spot from Rogers on some late-race restarts, Herring settled into second until the checkered flag flew.
"It was just a solid night," said Herring. "We had good pit stops and the car was fast. We had a lot of speed in it. I just couldn't get off turn one like these other guys could. Clay's car was real good off one, and that just sets you up for the back-shoot. Turn three, though, we were good. That is where I was able to hold my own and make my passes at.
"I could not get my restarts down tonight. I kept lighting up the tires. Clay was getting good starts and was getting two or three car lengths on me before we got to turn one. Then, once he hit turn one, I couldn't keep a hold of him. It is just one of those deals, but we will take it and move on from here. We will be better next time."
After the previous race in the USARacing Pro Cup Series season, the points were reset and shuffled according to how the drivers finished and raced earlier in the year as they make a four-race push to the championship. With the shuffle and the second-place finish, Herring sits third overall and in a great position to take the 2009 top honors.
"I just have to thank these guys that work hard on my team," said Herring. "It has been an up-and-down season for us. This is a good finish for us to start off the Championship Series. We are going to two tracks that we know we will be good at and have run good at in the past. I look forward to getting this thing back to victory lane before the season is over with."
The next race for Herring and the #22 BTS Tire & Wheel Distributors Ford Fusion team in the 2009 USARacing Pro Cup Championship Series will take place on Saturday, September 19th, at Iowa Speedway (IA).
