ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA.-The stage is set for what is anticipated to be the most exciting night of racing at the St. Augustine Speedway so far this year as the Southern Automobile Racing Association's AT&T Construction Modifieds and the Florida Sunbelt Series Late Models team up in a double, touring series spectacular Saturday night, August 7. The visit will mark the first ever appearances for both of these series at the St. Augustine oval and will provide the fans with a total of 175 laps of high intensity, touring series action featuring the biggest names in Florida short track racing. With an entry list that reads like a "Who's Who" of motorsports, race fans throughout Florida and Georgia will have an opportunity to witness first hand such short track legends as three-time World Series of Late Models Champion, Pete Orr, 1996 Hooters Cup Champion, Billy Bigley Jr., and 1994 NASCAR Winston Racing Series National Champion, David Rogers. In addition, All American 400 winner, Wayne Anderson, the legendary Jimmy Cope, and Florida Triple Crown winner, Darryl Shelnut. James Powell III, Jack Cook, Mike Franklin Jr., Dwayne Dempsey, Robert Hamm, Bobby Dixon and many, many more talented chauffeurs from around the state are all expected to be on hand for this double touring series event. Also scheduled to appear to compete against the touring teams are many of the local, St. Augustine Speedway heroes. George Thrift, winner of 11 Rick's Muffler Man Modified races this year is but one of the many local drivers expected to be on hand to take on the SARA touring teams. Scotty Lagasse Jr. will also be among the local contingent testing their skills against the top Late Model drivers in the state in the Sunbelt Series portion of this double-header. Fans will remember Lagasse's last attempt to win a major touring series race here at St. Augustine, an attempt that fell just short of success as he and veteran Dwayne Dempsey tangled in turn four coming to the checkered flag for the win. Lagasse, now one race wiser and more confident of his talent and equipment is not apt to make the same mistakes twice. This double thunder event featuring both, the SARA AT&T Construction Modifieds and the Florida Sunbelt Series Late Models takes place on August 7, 1999. Grandstand gates will be opening at 2:00 PM to give fans an opportunity to watch the practice sessions for each series. Qualifying will take place at the usual, 6:00 and the Sunbelt Late Model 125 will get underway at 7:30 with the SARA 50-lapper to follow. Also on tap for this event will be the Mini Stock and Hobby Stock divisions. Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $8 for military and Sr. citizens and children age 6-12 are just $5. As always, children under 6 are admitted at no charge.
