SPRINGPORT MI, May 13, 2000 - The Auto Value Michigan Legends series first race of the season was held at the 3/8 mile oval in Springport Michigan and was won by series veteran Billy Simmons. Billy managed to pass Gene Clark in the last five laps to take the checkered flag in this 23 race series.
Some 27 cars came to the starting line for an unusually cold May evening in Michigan. Among the starters were one of the largest groups of rookies this region has ever seen.
Gene Clark who usually runs in the middle of the pack surprised everyone with a strong race. From the drop of the green Gene maneuvered his white number 73 Dodge to the front. He managed to stay on the point for 19 of 25 laps in the feature event.
Surprisingly, the race was halted by very few cautions. The yellow flag only made three appearances. Two for minor spins and once when Rick Kilbourn ended up near the wall in turn one. Most veteran drivers were pleased with the performance of the rookies who were not responsible for any caution flags.
With six laps to go Billy, who started the race in 10th position, made his move around Gene and piloted the American Harley Davidson sponsored #771 to the checked flag. Following Billy across the finish line were Steve Jancar, John Turnbull Jr., Pat Rogers, and Mike Lowe.
Next week is an off weekend for the series. Racing resumes on Friday May 26th at the Dixie Motor Speedway, 1/4 mile paved oval, in Birch Run Michigan. Following that race the series heads to Galesburg Speedway on Sunday May 28th.
Official finishing order will be posted soon to http://www.michiganlegends.com.
