South Boston, Va. (April 13, 2002) -- In a performance reminiscent of 2001 at South Boston, Joey Clanton of Stockbridge (GA) became just the second driver in ASA's 35-year history to win the first three events to start a season by capturing the Textilease 3 00 presented by Little Trees at Big Daddy's South Boston Speedway. He topped the field here for all 300 laps last season.

Clanton, starting from the pole, gave up the lead for three laps from 121-123 when Indiana driver Tim Taylor elected to stay on the racetrack while the other lead lap cars pitted. Ironically, it was a second straight ASA event that saw Taylor as the only o ther race-leader beside Clanton.

A stirring battle developed between Clanton and Kevin Cywinski following the restart after a tenth of 11 cautions came out on lap 235. Cywinski made repeated attempts to pass Clanton while working the low side of the narrow .40-mile oval. There was repeate d contact between Clanton's Campfire USA car and Cywinski's Great Clips machine, but lapped cars ultimately made it impossible for Cywinski to establish momentum and make a defining pass.

At race-finish, Clanton led Cywinski and Gary St. Amant across the line for the podium finishers. It marks the third straight event with the same three drivers making up the top-three.

"I love this racetrack," declared the 29-year old Clanton. "There were quite a few lapped cars to deal with while trying to hold off Kevin (Cywinski). He's a great racer and it took all I had to contend with him.'

Clanton's win, his seventh in 43 career starts, ties Mike Eddy's ASA record having won three straight events to start the 1995 season. The Michigan legend turned the hat trick at Columbus, Toledo and Indianapolis that year.

The 2002 ASA Racing Series returns to action on Sunday, May 5 at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola (FL). The ASARacing.com 300 will take the green flag at 1 p.m. (EDST) and will be telecast live on TNN. For information call 1-888-ASA-1020.
