SOUTH BOSTON, Va. (May 1, 2003)-- Buoyed by hometown pride, Halifax County High School won the fourth annual ASE Danville Community College Tech Prep Student Challenge April 26 at Big Daddy's South Boston Speedway.

Halifax County Public Schools Superintendent Dennis Witt won the VIP race, giving Halifax County High School a good start for the evening. Student Phillip Clark added another win to the Blue Comets' win column, helping elevate the school to 230 points for the competition. The school won $1,000 for its efforts, along with $1,000 worth of Snap-on tools from ASE. The tools are to be used for educational purposes.

Finishing second in the competition was Dan River High School of Ringgold. The Wildcats' team captured 190 points and one victory courtesy of Casey Tate. Dan River received a $250 prize from the DCC Educational Foundation. George Washington High School and Chatham High School tied for third place, each garnering 180 points. Rounding out the top five were Tunstall High School and Gretna High School.

The student and VIP racers competed on go-karts provided by Faskarts of Clarksville. The students aggressively charged to the front, bumping and spinning out others along the way. Trash barrels even fell victim to their racing action.
