CHATSWORTH, GA - RIS - The Southern All Star Super Dirt Late Model Series made its first appearance of the 1997 season at North Georgia Speedway in Chatsworth, GA and 1996 SAS SDLM Champion Mark Miner grabbed the lead from his outside front row starting spot and was never headed as he notched his second win of the season in the 50 lap, $3,000-to-win event.

There were 41 Late Models on hand for Time Trials, and the SUNOCO Race Fuels Fast Time Award was won by Buddy Morris with a 14.57 clocking. The second fastest time went to Mark Miner with Dewayne Hughes third quick.

At the drop of the green flag Miner grabbed the lead and took off into the distance as the rest of the 24 car field battled for position. Morris was running a distant second as the cars strung out, with Hughes third, Gary McPherson in fourth and Paul Tims holding down fifth.

The field got a close up look at Miner's rear bumper when cautions slowed the race, but on each occasion he would quickly leave them behind on the restarts. Hughes was able to get around Morris and grab second, but could make no dent in the huge lead that Miner held.

With 14 laps to go, the fourth caution of the evening came out and on the restart Hughes stayed glued to Miners rear end until the fifth and final caution flew. On that restart Miner was able to make a good break and pull away for the win. Hughes finished in second with Morris holding on to third. McPherson took fourth and John Jones worked his way through the pack to take fifth.

Paul Tims settled for sixth, his best SAS finish to date, seventh went to Bo Shirley and Gar Dickson took the Eighth spot. Rounding out the top ten were Roger Best and Jack Killian.

The next SAS SDLM event will be at Penton Raceway in Penton, AL on May 16.
