Rick Johnson Awarded 1999 ASA Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie of the Year Title
Rougemont, NC - By starting the final event at Orange County Speedway on Saturday, Rick Johnson claimed the 1999 ASA ACDelco Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie of the Year award. Johnson still had another objective to complete; finish the "North Carolina Sweet Potato 400." Johnson did so, and finished in the 13th place in the final rundown. The #22 Nationwide Auction Systems Monte Carlo had qualified in the 21st starting position. Johnson, thanks to some good pit strategy by crew chief, Ron Malec, was able to lead 12 laps in the last event on the 1999 American Speed Association (ASA) ACDelco Challenge Series schedule. Johnson has only finished out of the top 15 once this year.
The 13th-place finish earned Johnson 133 points, giving him 2,864 points for the year. Johnson finished his rookie year with an 8th place points finish in the ASA ACDelco Challenge Series National Points standings.
"I'm really thrilled we were able to win the 1999 ASA Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie of the Year Award. The Nationwide Auction Systems team worked really hard this year and I owe a lot of the credit to them. The rookie field for this year was a strong group of competitors, and it was a great battle. Once we knew we had claimed the Rookie award, we were out there to race hard and do our best with the #22 Monte Carlo. I got to lead some more laps, but the car was loose and I was just hanging on for the finish," Rick ecstatically declared.
Herzog Motorsports co-owner, Randy Herzog, was thrilled with Rick's performance for this year. "Rick has done a great job this year. Our goal going into this year was the 1999 ASA Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie of the Year Award. Rick ran hard each week and never claimed a single DNF (did not finish). Nationwide Auction Systems came on board half way through the season, but we are delighted they could share in the excitement of winning this meaningful award with us."
