New Egypt, NJ (May 6) -- Taking charge just prior to the halfway signal, Southampton, NJ's Bob Drayton captured the biggest win of his career when he topped the Modified field for his first ever checkered flag on Mid-State Race Page Night at New Egypt Speedway on Saturday night.
"We had to borrow a transmission from Matt Papiez to make it into the race," an excited Drayton told the crowd. "I think we're going to have it gold-plated!"
Tom Carberry returned from last week's flip to take charge on the green in the 30-lap main. On the second go-round, defending champion Billy Pauch fell out with driveline problems. Carberry held the point until lap 13 when he slowed with engine woes, putting Tom Hager in front. But Bob Drayton was flying, and finally muscled his way under Hager and ran away. Even a five-to-go caution didn't faze Drayton as he maintained his hold on the #1 spot through to the checker. Kenny Brightbill rebounded from a an early race mishap to claim second, with Keith Hoffman in third, Hager fourth and Mike Hendershot finishing fifth.
Fighting off several challengers, West Creek, NJ's Tom Eppolite posted his second career feature win in the Sportsman 20-lap main event. "The car was getting a real good bite on the bottom," Eppolite said. Trailing Eppolite were Mike Toth, Larry Archer, Ryan Godown and Ron John Koczon.
Brick, NJ's Ralph Gargiulo captured his 10th career checkered flag in the Street Stock 15-lapper, his first of 2000. "It was a fun track to race on tonight!" Gargiulo stated Starting 15th on the grid, Gargiulo took the lead with five to go and survived a hard fought battle with several challengers for the win. George Quinlan was second followed by Pat Conaway, Al Cheney and Evan Berardi.
Doug Liedl of Hillsborough, NJ, scored his first win in the Mid-State Communications Rookie event with Dave Hoffman in pursuit. Hoffman settled for second with a fast-closing Gene Stravinsky, John McClelland and Joey Tinnes Jr. making up the front five.
Fans were on the receiving end of tons of giveaways, including two bicycles, Beanie Babies, candy, plants and gift certificates.
