VERNON, NY -- Track maintenance crews at Utica-Rome Speedway have been busy applying an all-new clay surface for the 2002 race season at the historic Sunday night half-mile stock car track sanctioned by DIRT Motorsports.

Work first began several weeks after the final race of 2001, and the entire track surface was completely overhauled. Hundreds of dump truck loads of rock free clay were laid down on the turns and the straightaways, and turns one and two were widened by nearly ten feet. A screening machine screened the rocks, and the track was graded and left to cure during the winter.

With the spring season and warmer weather now here, track crews will be hard at work preparing the new clay surface for the upcoming Gates-Cole Insurance Season Opener, which is set for Sunday May 5. The fresh surface will be graded and tilled repeatedly over the next several weeks, and drivers should expect an ultra fast and smooth half-mile that will be easy on tires during the upcoming race season.

Former track promoter Eric Kingsley will remain on hand to manicure the race surface and train the proper methods of track preparation to new promoter Tom Cole. Track management expects this complete overhaul of the track to provide a continuance of the great racing that Utica-Rome is well known for on a weekly basis. On most race nights, the track has three distinct grooves to race on and always has been applauded by many of the drivers.

Look for an ultra-fast, super competitive and smooth Utica-Rome Speedway half-mile during the 2002 race season featuring two and three wide racing all around the track. Excitement and enthusiasm are building and race teams are eager to test the new clay surface for the first time on Sunday May 5 in the Gates-Cole Insurance Season Opener.
