American Speed Association Adds Cornelius To Midwest Tour Roster
DAYTONA BEACH, FL (March 5, 2007) -- The American Speed Association Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by Echo Outdoor Power Equipment has signed 22-year-old Dean Cornelius of Chaska, Minnesota as a championship contender for the inaugural 2007 season.
"I'm sizing down my operation this year, and just trying to get a firmer focus with one car. I want to get on the consistent track to success and not be spread so thin financially," Dean explained.
Cornelius is taking his education to the track through the opportunities available with the ASA Midwest Tour. Dean attended Finish Line Racing School in Edgewater, Florida. He has gained valuable knowledge demonstrating many product lines of the race industry and promoting sales and service as a driver and representative of Northern Racing Products. He is involved in every step of building his racecars and is skilled working with shocks and chassis setup. "Experience is the greatest education. There's no school that can prepare you for everything. You just have to do it," Cornelius said.
Cornelius has been racing since 1990 competing in quarter midgets. He won numerous track records and championships, as well as the Las Vegas Winter Nationals Championship. Dean raced his first late model in 2001 and picked up Rookie of the Year honors at Raceway Park (Shakopee, MN) with one feature win to his credit. The next two years Cornelius competed regularly at both Raceway Park and Elko Speedway (MN), finishing sixth in point standings both years at Elko Speedway and runner-up (2002) and winner (2003) of the Track Championship at Raceway Park where he also set a track record in qualifying. Dean defended the title in 2004, finishing second in year-end standings at Raceway Park and also competed in the Minnesota Late Model Challenge Series. Cornelius devoted 2005 to the final running of the Midwest All-Star Racing Series and was awarded Rookie of the Year and finished second in championship point standings. In 2006 Dean ran in an assortment of late model events across the Upper Midwest to gain experience on new tracks with different competitors.
"I can't say enough about this kid, he's good all around. He's earning his stripes and I really like how he is going about it," stated ASAMT VP Steve Einhaus. "I have seen him after driving all night without sleep and found him sleeping in the back of his truck waiting to get in to the track at the Madison International Speedway. Then he goes out there and either wins the race or at least finishes in the top five - he's a true racer and that is why I think he'll be a major contender in the Tour."
"I'm glad to see Kwik Trip involved with the Tour and any help we can get with gas and diesel fuel. Any budget team can always use a break on fuel so it's beneficial to everyone," Dean concluded about the 2007 title sponsor.
Cornelius will be making his debut at the ASA Midwest Tour inaugural season opener at Elko Speedway April 28, 2007.
