Jesse Saunders takes the GM Performance Parts Shootout at LaCrosse. Mark Hartline wins the inaugural GM Performance Parts Shootout Points Championship.
(West Salem, Wisconsin 10/07/05): The ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts has settled into the LaCrosse (WI) Fairgrounds Speedway in West Salem, Wisconsin for day two of the 36th annual Oktoberfest Weekend. This is race number 13 of 14 on the 2005 schedule.
The GM Performance Part Shootout, a 25-lap feature for the drivers who unfortunately did not make the main feature, the Oktoberfest 100, is now complete. Jesse Saunders went by race long leader, Brent Downey with four laps to go and from there, the Janesville, Wisconsin pilot held off a late charge from Downey to win his second GM Performance Parts Shootout Feature of the season
By taking the green flag and starting the LaCrosse GM Performance Parts Shootout, Gilbert, Illinois veteran, Mark Hartline was crowned the inaugural 2005 GM Performance Parts Shootout Points Champion!
Jim Ross and Downey led the field to the green flag to begin the 25-lap "Hooligan" race for the drivers who unfortunately did not make the main Oktoberfest 100 to be held later in the program. After a brief side-by-side dual, Downey would use the outside groove to get by Ross to take the early lead.
Downey would set the pace while Jesse Saunders began his charge to the front from his eighth starting spot. Saunders picked off cars one by one and soon found himself on Downey's back bumper as the laps were winding down.
Saunders pulled up along-side Downey and on lap 21 would take the lead. From there, Saunders, who won his first GM Performance Parts Shootout earlier in the season at his home track, the Madison (WI) International Speedway, back on May 27th, would fend off a last minute charge from Downey to claim his second GM Performance Parts Shootout feature win of the season.
Downey settled for second as Ross, Pete Moore, and Jason Miller would complete the top five. Hartline would finish sixth and officially clinch the 2005 GM Performance Parts Shootout Points Championship!
The Oktoberfest 100 will get the green flag at approximately 8pm. 2004 NASCAR Midwest Regional and LaCrosse Late Model Champion, Charlie Menard, along-with current ASA Late Model Series Points Leader, Stephen Leicht will lead a star studded 26-car field to the green flag at approximately 8pm to highlight day two of the 36th annual Oktoberfest Weekend.
