Bill Tomlinson wins GM Performance Parts Shootout at Kalamazoo!
The ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts has settled into the Kalamazoo (MI) Speedway for the Kalamazoo 100 Presented by Tough Coat Powder Coatings. The GM Performance Parts Shootout 25-lap feature for drivers not making the 100-lap feature was up first and another hometown driver showed the traveling stars how to get it done around the fast 3/8s mile paved oval. Hank Miller earlier won the Motive Gear Pole award so Schoolcraft, Michigan pilot, Bill Tomlinson got in on the hometown drivers fun and led all 25 laps to pick up his first Shootout win of the season.
Jesse Saunders and Tomlinson led the field to chief starter, Tom Powell's green flag and the race was on to the first corner. Saunders and Tomlinson stayed side by side until coming out of turn for to complete the first lap when Tomlinson used his momentum from the outside groove to carry him to the line first. Tomlinson would then set sail for two more laps until the first of two cautions flew on lap three when Mark Hartline and Nick Mahlik got together in turn two. On the restart, Joey Dennewitz worked his way around Saunders and set his sights on Tomlinson for the top spot.
The second and final caution flew on lap 11 when Greg Nienhouse looped his mount over in turn four. On the ensuing restart, Dennewitz tried to sneak past Tomlinson for the lead but Tomlinson would have none of that and maintained the top position. Tomlinson a former competitor in the tracks regular Sports Stocks division, and the only driver in ASA Late Model Series history to attempt every show since the series inception in 2003, would go on and lead all 25 laps to pick up his first career series victory!
Dennewitz would settle for second as Tommy Cook, Saunders, James Butler, Hartline, Nienhouse, Bob Johnson, Tony Rosebrugh, and Matt Minnifield rounded out the top 10.
Tomlinson, who lives just 20 minutes South of the speedway, down US 131 in Schoolcraft, Michigan carries sponsorship on the side of his Chevrolet Monte Carlo from Trax Automotive as well as Racing Anonymous Incorporated, A.R.P. Aluminum Racing Products, Signs and More, Purity Cylinder Gases, and Tomlinson Racing.
