Doug Mahlik takes the GM Performance Parts Shootout at Calhoun County.
The ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts ran the 25-lap GM Performance Parts Shootout as a prelude to the big Snap-On Tools 100 Presented by Lane Automotive and Q106fm. Out of the 40 cars that checked into the Calhoun County (MI) Speedway pit area. Only 26 would start the 100-lap feature. That left 14 cars remaining for the 25-lap shootout. Doug Mahlik made no mistake all race long as the Green Bay, Wisconsin veteran led all 25 laps to pick up his first win of the 2005 season.
Greg Nienhouse and Doug Mahlik led the field to the green flag to begin the 25-lap feature for the drivers not transferring to the 100-lap feature later in the program. Mahlik would beat out Nienhouse to the first corner to take the early lead while the rest of the field settled in behind him. Mahlik would pull away from the pack while the rest of the field battled amongst themselves.
The first of three cautions didn't fly until lap 15 when Mark Hartline looped his mount in turn three after contact with Doug Mahlik's younger brother, Nick Mahlik. On the restart Doug Mahlik again pulled away from the pack. Tommy Cook, a winner earlier this season at Calhoun County in the Super Pro Series was charging to the front from his eighth starting spot and began reeling in Mahlik. Cook caught up to the Green Bay, Wisconsin driver but ran out of time as Mahlik would fend off the challenges of Cook and lead all 25 laps to post his first feature win of the season.
Cook settled for second as Nienhouse, Jesse Smith, Bill Tomlinson, Wally Carlson, Hartline, Troy Barnes, Bruce Lee, and Michael Tutino would round out the top 10.
It's now time for the Snap-On Tools 100 Presented by Lane Automotive and Q106fm. Mike Satkowiak and Derek Bischak, who carries sponsorship from the night's main sponsor, Snap-On Tools will bring the stellar 26-car field down to the green flag.
