Brent Downey, looks to be a top contender for the Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the year title in 2005.
At the start of every season from the local short track all the way to NASCAR, drivers, fans, and teams look forward to the fresh faces that will adorn their respective tracks in the form of Rookie contenders. In the ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts, that is certainly no exception. Perhaps no other traveling series in the country can boast a list of high caliber rookie contender quite like the ASA Late Model Series' Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year candidates. Add another high profile name to that list, as Hoosier State driver, Brent Downey will join that impressive list for the 2005 season.
"We're going to run for top honors in the Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year title chase." Said Downey as he talked about his plans for the 2005 season. "We hopefully can notch a couple of victories, stay up front, and finish strong every race. If that all works out, the points will fall into place." Continued the Avon, Indiana driver. "We have a great teammate in Peter Cozzolino and we both hope to be strong all 16 shows." Ended the 22-year-old pilot.
A former competitor with the now defunct ASA National tour, Brent boasts a career high seventh at Lake Erie (PA) Speedway in 2004 on the National tour in limited appearances. Started racing at the age of 5 in Quarter Midgets and notched numerous victories. Downey was the 1999 Legend Cars Young Lions National Points Champion and was also the Kendall Indiana Late Models Sportsman of the Year in 2000 in his rookie season in a full-bodied stock car. Brent finished eighth in points in 2001 in the CRA Super Series.
What better teammate to have then former ASA National Tour stand out, Peter Cozzolino! A former winner in the now defunct National tour, Cozzolino will bring a wealth of experience to the table. Peter began his full bodied stock car racing career in 1998, after several seasons in what is now the Auto Value Super Sprint series as well as various open wheel sanctioning bodies. Cozzolino was the ASA Rookie Runner-up to current NASCAR Nextel Cup star Jimmie Johnson during that 1998 season. In 1999, Peter moved to the Sunoco Super Series (Now CRA Super Series), capturing Rookie of the Year honors. He finished third in Sunoco points in 2001, posting three victories. In 2002, Peter returned to the now defunct ASA National tour and in 2003 scored his first career ASA victory at Indianapolis (IN) Raceway Park. He added a second victory in three events at Berlin (MI) Raceway in August 2003. He placed 10th in the final point standings, posting two top-five finishes and five top 10s.
For the 2005 season, Brent will be running his Downey Racing LLC, Lefthander Chassis Chevrolet Monte Carlo. He will be teamed up with Cozzolino and both will be making a run at the series championship while Downey will also be shooting for the Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year title. Downey will carry sponsorship from Lucas Oil Products as well as Generic Generators and Commonwealth Engineers Inc.
