15-year-old Jesse Smith wins his first ever ASA Late Model Series event!
Takes home the GM Performance Parts Shootout at Baer Field (IN) Speedway.

The ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts is at the Baer Field (IN) Speedway in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The 8th annual International Gold Cup 100 is race number eight of 15 on the 2005 schedule. This event marks the halfway point of the 2005 season for the ASA Late Model Series.

This is also the second of three appearances for the ASALM Series at the Fort Wayne, Indiana speed plant. The third and final appearance of the 2005 season is on Sunday September 11th for the Indiana 100.

In an effort to give the packed house on hand the best show possible, ASALM Series Promoter, Ron Varney and Baer Field Speedway Promoter, Tom Isch have gotten together and mutually agreed to start all 30 competitors for tonight's 100-lap feature!

With that announcement, the GM Performance Parts Shootout took on a different format, similar to the one used at I-70 (MO) Speedway back on June 18th. Qualifiers 21-30 started straight up in an eight-lap sprint to determine positions 21-30 in tonight's 8th annual International Gold Cup 100!

15-year-old Jesse Smith and Bob Varney led the field to the green flag for the eight-lap sprint. After a lap of side by side racing, Smith edged Varney at the start/finish line to lead lap one. Smith immediately began to pull away from the pack leaving Varney to battle with Tony Rosebrugh.

Smith would make short work of the field as the 15-year-old from Saint Louis, Missouri, one of the "Young Lions of the ASA Late Model Series" would lead the whole way enroute to his first ever ASALM Series win! With the win, Smith will start inside the 11th row in tonight's 8th annual International Gold Cup 100! In winning the Shootout, Smith became the youngest driver in series history to score a series win!

Varney settled for second ahead of Rosebrugh, Brent Downey, Mark Hartline, Troy Barnes, Michael Gaier, Bill Tomlinson, Jack Varney Jr., and Doug True rounded out the top 10.

Veteran Ryan Tedesco and Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year Points Leader, Brian Campbell will lead a stellar 30-car field to the green flag for tonight's 100-lap feature. Motive Gear Fast Pole Award winner, Bobby Stremme, the 2004 ASA Late Model Series Champion and Reigning Rookie of the Year, drew an eight for an inversion putting the South Bend, Indiana driver outside the fourth row!

After a fireworks display and pre race festivities, the 8th annual International Gold Cup 100 will get the green flag at approximately 9:15pm. All times are Central Standard Time. Stay up to date throughout the evening by staying logged in at: www.asalatemodels.com
