PENDLETON, Ind. (January 7, 2004) - The American Speed Association and BFGoodrich® Tires have announced the ASA Late Model Series will utilize the successful BFGoodrich Traction T/A Tires in 2004. This marks the first season a Late Model series mandates the use of radial tires.
"This only furthers our relationship with BFGoodrich Tires while at the same time elevates the ASA Late Model Series," said Steve Dale, ASA president/CEO. "It will give the Late Model Series competitors the opportunity to learn about radial tires and enhance their careers in the sport."
ASA began a partnership with BFGoodrich Tires in 2000, making the transition from the previously used bias-ply tires to the radials. The BFGoodrich Traction T/A Tires have received phenomenal results the past four years on the ASA National Tour cars.
"Our relationship with ASA has been beneficial to our overall motorsports portfolio and we are excited to expand our partnership with the Late Model Series," said Todd Steen, motorsports marketing manager for BFGoodrich Tires. "The ASA Late Model Series will not only enhance the brand's visibility, but will give yet another set of competitors experience on radial tires."
Radial tires will provide teams and drivers with improved wear and very stable performance during long green-flag runs. Up to two left-side tread compounds and up to three right-side tread compounds will be offered as a function of the types of tracks visited during the racing season.
Since the ASA National Tour made the switch to the radial tires, teams have run nearly 850,000 laps, translating into more than 457,000 miles on BFGoodrich Traction T/A Tires in official competition, not including preseason or in-season testing. These numbers were compiled from the 77 race weekends held during the past four seasons of competition.
In 2004, ASA Late Model Series competitors can change only two BFGoodrich Tires per event. For example, after purchasing four tires at a first event, in succeeding events, only two tires can be purchased. This measured use of tires is possible because of the superior product that BFGoodrich Tires offers, allowing a lower the cost of racing in the series. The ASA Late Model Series will use the 10-inch BFGoodrich Traction T/A Tires, one-inch narrower than the tires used in the ASA National Tour.
Teams interested in purchasing tires for the ASA Late Model Series should await further instruction from ASA and refrain from contacting BFGoodrich Tires. An announcement will be forth coming concerning the appropriate contact information for the 2004 season.
The entire 2004 ASA Late Model Series schedule continues to be formulated with a total of 14 events expected to make up the final slate.
Officials are planning for 100-lap green flag races with a preference to not have competitors changing tires, adding fuel or needing pit stops during the events. The cars will include makes from three major manufacturers - General Motors, Ford and Dodge. They will utilize template bodies and engines from all three.
Rules for the 2004 ASA Late Model Series are available by contacting the ASA office at (765) 778-8088.
