Pendleton, Ind. (August 7, 2003) -- Officials from the ASA Racing Series have announced that the Midwest All-Star Racing Series (MARS) will hold a 100-lap event on Sunday, August 31, on the eve of ASA's Minnesota Governor's Cup 400 at the .375- mile Elko Speedway. Also on Saturday and Sunday, ASA's teams will compete in a National Pit Stop Contest Presented by BFGoodrich Tires and SK Hand Tool.

"We are very happy to be associated with the Labor Day event at Elko. It has been a tradition in this area to head up to the Twin Cities for racing. The MARS event will give the race fans a good variety of racing with the 400-lap ASA event the following day," said Gary Vercauteren, director of MARS. "Our event will showcase some of the better regional drivers from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Illinois. There are also some possibilities of ASA stars competing in the event."

The MARS tour is very similar to the regional based Sunoco Super Series in Indiana and the Alabama Southern All-Star Racing Series. MARS was created in 1999 and is in the midst of its fifth season of late model racing.

"We are very similar to Sunoco and SAS. Virtually every track we visit, the late model racers can compete with our cars. We have many of the same rules the old ARTGO Series utilized. At Elko, we expect many of the racers that compete at ASA' s Member Track I-94 Raceway," added Vercauteren.

The Wisconsin-based series currently has 12 dates on its 2003 schedule with appearances at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna, Norway Raceway in Michigan, The Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wis., and Minnesota tracks I-94 and Elko.

Jeff Van Oudenhoven of Kimberly, Wis., currently leads the point standings with Jamie Iverson of Michigan, Jeff Storm, Ryan Mathews and Gordie Sannes Jr. rounding out the top five. 2003 event winners include Terry Baldry, Van Oudenhoven, Iverson, Paul Menard and Steve Carlson.
