KANKAKEE, Ill. (Monday) Joe Izzo beat his older brother Tony Izzo Jr. out of Turn 4 on the last lap for a $5,000 victory in the 11th leg of the UMP Summernationals at Kankakee Speedway.

"I really thought he beat me," said Joe Izzo, who went to the scales without realizing he'd won. "I didn't think I had enough at the finish line."

The runner-up had the race in hand until the final laps, when a caution gave Joe Izzo a shot at his brother.

"What do you say?" Tony Izzo Jr. asked. "I guess I took it for granted that we were going to finish 1-2. I blocked the racetrack in Turns 1 and 2, but I didn't in Turns 3 and 4. I should have blocked it for another three-quarters of a lap, and the roles would have been reversed. But I gave him room by being conservative, and it cost me. I gave one away tonight, that's the bottom line."

UMP Summernationals points leader Rick Aukland finished third, while Bob Pierce and Randy Korte rounded out the top-five finishers at the quarter-mile oval south of Chicago.

The feature race had just two cautions. The yellow appeared on lap 23 for the stalled car of Ron Fisher Jr., then again on the 41st lap for a wreck that took Kevin Weaver, Corey Turner and John Provenzano out of contention.

"I didn't like that last caution," the winner said. "I thought I was starting to catch up to Tony. I mean, the car was just getting better lap after lap. I thought that yellow my hurt my chances to catch him." Instead, Joe Izzo moved quickly past lapped cars separating him from the leader after the restart, setting up his last-lap pass.
