MONTGOMERY, AL - Johnny Sauter recorded his 4th career ASA top 5 finish at Montgomery Speedway Sunday afternoon. The 3rd place finish put him solidly in 1st position in the Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie of the Year battle, and 8th in overall point standings.

Sauter started the race in 9th position, but quickly moved up as high as fifth in the opening 100 laps.

"We were pretty tight in the center of the corner, so I was just riding, waiting for the chance to pit," said Sauter.

That chance would come at lap 129 and once again the A.P. Performance Racing pit crew had a great stop. Unfortunately, Johnny was blocked in to his pit stall by the car ahead of him and had to back up to get out, costing him valuable time. Sauter did come out of the pits in the top 10 and would remain there for the rest of the day.

Mid-race, Johnny was involved in an incident coming into turn one. While making a move for the lead, Sauter became the middle of a three-wide sandwich entering the corner. The cars made contact, but continued on without serious damage.

"I guess that was a rookie mistake on my part," commented Sauter. "I really wanted to lead a lap and I ended up damaging a great race car. I think we had a car capable of winning the race."

As always, the last lap of the race was most exciting. Johnny held on to the 3rd position, but did it sliding across the start finish line while his car was entangled with the 4th place car of Butch Miller.

"That's just racing on the last lap, no one was trying to wreck anybody. Butch was trying to get the 3rd position and I was trying to hold on to it," Sauter explained of the last lap excitement.

The series will make its inaugural visit to Concord Motorsport Park on Sunday, May 20 for the BFGoodrich Tires 300. You can watch all of the action at 1 p.m. (Eastern) on live on TNN. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MAY 7, 2001 CONTACT: A.P. Performance Racing Katie Loomis 704-799-8785
