Finishing 3rd in the longest race of the season, Jimmie Johnson captured his 5th podium finish of the year at Jennerstown Speedway Sunday. Johnson and the #44 Pennzoil Chevrolet Monte Carlo started in 7th place and he was in contention all day, one of only 5 drivers to remain on the lead lap. Johnson would capture his 9th top-5 finish of the year in the 18th event on the American Speed Association (ASA) ACDelco Challenge Series schedule, with 2 events remaining. Had he won, Johnson would have collected a $10,000 bonus in the Jani-King Triple Crown Challenge.
With his 3rd-place finish, Johnson was able to make up considerable ground on the points leaders. Johnson maintains 3rd place in the ASA ACDelco Challenge Series National Point standings, but is within striking distance to the leader Tim Sauter, with a 73-point deficit. Johnson s points total for the year is 2,831.
This was a great points race for us. With Mike (Miller) having his problems, we are still in contention for this championship. The Pennzoil team did a superb job in the pits. We are going to Cedar Rapids where I had a strong finish last time. I can t wait to try to close in on this championship, Johnson said.
Stan Herzog, co-owner of Herzog Motorsports, was delighted with Johnson, Jimmie ran an excellent race. We stayed out of trouble and pulled off another podium finish. This team still has their sights set on winning the championship and that feat is not out of the question. They do everything they can to keep Jimmie and the Pennzoil Monte Carlo up front. The last two races should be exciting ones.
