Irwindale, Calif. - - (Friday, September 14, 2001) Irwindale Speedway today announced that the proceeds from Saturday, September 15's races would be donated to the American Red Cross and the Fireman's Relief Fund. "We asked ourselves how we could help and we feel that this is an appropriate response to the situation, " said track Vice President Bob DeFazio. "We had thought about canceling or postponing the event but an empty race track on a Saturday night can't do anyone any good. Racing is a community, " he went on, "The fans and the racers who come here week in and week will be doing something positive that they can feel good about ... We all need that."

"Obviously, we are very pleased with this wonderful gesture by Irwindale Speedway, they are standing tall in this tough time, this aid is very needed and will be used to aid in the national disaster." said Lisa Derderian, the Director of Communications for the San Gabriel Chapter of the American Red Cross.

As fans come into the Speedway on Saturday night, each will be given a candle. At around 10:00 pm, after the final race of the evening, the track lights will be dimmed and everyone will be asked to light their candle as symbol of caring for the thousands who have perished and all who have been left hurting. "We want to see 5,000 candles all lighted and held high," said DeFazio. "That will be our extended family's small tribute to the fallen."
