On February 13 in a tiny cemetery just outside the city of Kingston, Ontario, Mark and Donna Van Luven said goodbye to their tiny daughter Brette. In her less than six months of life, Brette had touched many lives and many of them also, gathered to grieve along with the families of Mark and Donna on that cold Tuesday afternoon.

Brette, born in September, 2000 was a much anticipated addition to Mark and Donna's lives. Mark, began his in the limited super ranks. at Oswego, and last season moved up to the supermodified division full time. He and his brothers, Ian and Scott, have become well known fixtures in the Oswego Speedway pits, always ready to lend a hand or a bit of Canadian humor. When Mark and his wife Donna had their first baby, a few weeks after Oswego's Classic weekend, many of their racing friends shared in the joy.

After Christmas, however, that joy began to fade. A good-natured baby from birth, Brette's pain-laden tears indicated something was very wrong. In and out of the Halifax Children's Hospital during the month of January, Brette's health steadily declined although doctors could not quite determine the cause. Brette became the darling of many of the nurses and staff at the hospital who gave their all trying to save her.

On February 6, 2001, Brette, although fighting a valiant fight in her tiny way, succumbed. She was laid to rest in the Murvale Cemetery after a very touching funeral service at the James Reid Cataraqui Chapel filled with many family and friends of the VanLuven couple.

Mark and Donna, because of the loving care that Brette received in Halifax, have asked donations be made in her name to the following: Gena Walton, IWK Grace Foundation, 5850-5980 University Ave, PO Box 3070, Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada B3J 3G9.

Condolences to the Van Luvens may be sent to Mark and Donna Van Luven, 77 Manitou Crescent, Apt. 302, Amherstview, Ontario, Canada K7N 1C2.

Heartfelt condolences to Mark and Donna Van Luven and to all their family and friends. Much of the racing community has already given an outpouring of support and for that the Van Luvens are extremely thankful and grateful.
