LAS VEGAS -- Dave Byrd of San Jose, Calif. won the fifth annual I.M.C.A. Modifieds Duel in the Desert at the dirt track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Saturday night. Sixteen states were represented with 144 drivers in attendance.

A heat race win gave Byrd a guaranteed start in the 24-car I.M.C.A. Modifieds main event, while a third-place finish in the trophy dash earned him the third starting position in the feature.

David Murray of Oberlin, Kan. started on the outside pole and took an early lead in the 40-lap main event. Byrd took command on lap 12 and never looked back. He took the checkered flag to win $3,000. Robert Miller of Gardnerville, Nev. finished second followed by Justen Yeager of Green River, Wyo. and Brandon Carly of Farmington, N.M.

"I was running scared, those guys are all great behind me," Byrd said. "I did not take anything for granted. I ran every lap like it was the best.

"This is by far the biggest I.M.C.A. race anywhere in the Western United States that we run and we look forward to it all year," Byrd said.

Rick Tara won the 12-lap Thunderstocks main event. Rick Watterworth finished second followed by Steve Ewbank.
