Cedar Rapids, Iowa (May 24, 2003) -- Kevin Cywinski turned the fastest lap in qualifying for tonight's ASA Racing Iowa 300 at Hawkeye Downs Speedway. Cywinski of Wausau, Wis., toured the .50-mile oval in 18.954 seconds at 94.967 mph. Driving the No. 1 SK Hand Tool / Great Clips Chevrolet, it marks the sixth career pole for the 1997 series champion.

"I was surprised with my lap," said Cywinski. "We did a mock qualifying lap in practice, but I drove the car to hard in turn three, but we still turned a 19.1. I thought we could do a 19 flat. We were fortunate to be in the 18s. We tested here a couple weeks ago and had a good car when we got here."

$50,000 rookie candidate Reed Sorenson of Georgia qualified second, with an official qualifying time of 19.127 seconds at 94.108 mph.

"We have a decent car on old tires and are looking to pick up a top five," said Sorenson. "There are a lot of veterans up front, so it will be tough to stay there."

1998 Rookie Runner-Up Peter Cozzolino timed in third quickest with Florida's Mike Cope and three-time ASA champion Butch Miller rounding out the top five in qualifying for the sixth event of the 2003 campaign.

Iowa's Dudley Fleck Hiawatha leads the local contingency. Fleck will start 20th in tonight's ASA Racing Iowa 300 at Hawkeye Downs.

The Iowa 300 goes green at 8 p.m. (Central). Tickets are available at a cost of $25 for general admission seats.
